Magda Szubanski has shared a heartwarming video while she battles a “rare and fast-moving” blood cancer. The actress, best known for her role as Sharon Strezlecki in Kath & Kim, took to Instagram to share a message for drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova after seeing a video of the pair reacting to the show last year.

“So, I know I’m coming to this very late,” Magda began the video. “So many people have sent me links to Katya and Trixie watching Kath & Kim and loving it and laughing along with us and loving the characters and I just wanted to say thank you, I really appreciate your appreciation.”

She added that she thought they would enjoy watching Big Girls Blouse, the sketch comedy show, which is where she, Gina Riley and Jane Turner first originated the characters from Kath & Kim.

“Also, another little thing, background info, Sharon’s hair is actually a nod to the Dorothy Hamill wedge,” the star shared.

“Dorothy Hamill, being an ice-skater in the late 70s, who had a very sensible haircut, because every sporty girl needs a sensible, functional fitness hair-do.

“Mine is courtesy of chemo couture.”

Magda revealed in May that she was diagnosed with stage four Mantle cell lymphoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma is an aggressive and rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

She told followers that the diagnosis is “serious”, but she’s started the Nordic protocol, which is “one of the best treatments available”.

“I’m lucky to be getting absolutely world-class care here in Melbourne,” she wrote.

“I won’t sugar-coat it: it’s rough. But I’m hopeful. I’m being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I’ve never felt more held by the people around me.”

Magda explained that Mantle cell lymphoma is an “obscure” form of cancer which was only discovered via a breast screening when doctors discovered her “lymph nodes were up”.

“TBH, I’ve been feeling pretty rats**t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and – voila!” she continued. “So the takeaway is – get tested and listen to your body!

“For now, just know I’m in good hands, good spirits—but I reserve my yuman right to be a cranky old moll.”
