During the most recent episode of The One Show, Clara Amfo and Lauren Laverne spoke to Petula Clark, Neil Morrissey and Jamie-Lee O’Donnell.

As the two BBC stars welcomed their guests onto the show, which recently saw one host make a blunder on-air, they were quick to address the Downtown singer, who has recently released a book about her incredible career.

However, it wasn’t long before people watching were left distracted over Petula’s youthful appearance after discovering the singer is turning 93 next month.

Taking to X, one person said: “Petula looks amazing.” Someone else wrote: “WHAT A GIRL. #LEGEND ‘scuse the caps, it’s valid though !!!”

Another viewer added: “Wow. Hard to believe Petula is 92. Looks and sounds much much younger!” In agreement someone else said: “Petula Clark is a QUEEN.”

One fan commented: “Petula Clark wow she looks so good 93 next month!” While another person shared: “Heavens, Petula Clark is in good shape for 92.”

During their chat, the singer explained why she decided to write a book about her career at this moment in time.

Addressing the singer, Lauren commented: “You said you’d never write an autobigography, but you’ve changed your mind, why?”

She replied: “Well, I really didn’t want to write. I’ve been asked so many times, ‘Oh, you’ve got to tell your story, it’s so interesting’. I had no desire to do it!

“Then, my husband talked me into it and he passed away last year. So, I decided I would do it. But, it wasn’t easy! I’m not really very nostalgic.

“I had to look back, I had to really dig around in my past, and it’s ok, I suppose. Here I am, it’s out now!”

Clara highlighted that Petula’s career started 83 years ago when she was a young child, singing for the BBC. Showing an image of her as a child singing into the microphone, she explained that she was sending a message to her uncle who was in the armed forces.

She said: “We done the rehearsal and during rehearsal there was a huge air raid, the place was shaking and a lot of the kids were up from the country and were crying.

“I was blasé, I was a London kid. So, the producers said, ‘would somebody like to come up and sing a song? A piece of poetry?’

“I said I’d sing a song, so I went up on the stage and sang. They heard it in the control room and went ‘hmm, we’d like to use your voice in the programme’. That’s the first time I was heard on the air.”
