DJ LeMahieu latest casualty as Yankees' injury concerns intensify

While we’re already on this topic, let’s add another one to the list. When I read about Luis Gil yesterday, I held back from an overreacting yell, thinking, “Why always us?”

And even though this is an aging DJ LeMahieu, who hasn’t exactly proved his value lately and has battled injuries in recent years, I’ve got to say it again: Why us? Or maybe, given his history, a more fitting reaction would be: Here we go again.

Just moments ago, we got official word that Giancarlo Stanton will miss Opening Day and start the 2025 season on the injured list. For the first time in his career will Big G be missing Opening Day.

And now, DJ LeMahieu has joined the list, tweaking his calf in his just his second at-bat of spring training. Did someone say injury-prone?

“We’ll see what we have … it’s at least a little concerning,” said Aaron Boone.

DJ LeMahieu, a three-time All-Star, hasn’t had a fully healthy season since 2020. He admitted last year that his struggles kept him up at night.

“I’ve definitely lost a lot of sleep, and it’s tough to be a guy that the team can’t rely on at times. I always take pride in that, so to not be able to do that, it’s definitely frustrating.

At the same time, I haven’t lost my passion for helping this team and my passion for this team. That keeps me going.”

DJ LeMahieu was determined to prove he could bounce back, but if this latest setback is any indication, that bounce-back might not be coming anytime soon.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are stuck dealing with yet another injury headache before the season has even begun.
