After staying relatively quiet about the incident when it aired on TV, Married At First Sight’s Carina Mirabile has finally revealed what happened the night her partner Paul Antoine punched a hole in a door. The controversial groom had a violent off-camera outburst in their apartment after a night out with their co-stars Rhi Disljenkovic and Jeff Gobbels, where he learned that Carina had previously slept with US rapper Quavo.

While the show’s relationship experts labelled his behaviour as “toxic, inappropriate and unacceptable”, Paul was allowed to remain in the experiment and continue his relationship with Carina. The couple ended up going to Final Vows, where she decided to call it quits, although they have since stayed in touch and remained friends.

During the first episode of her brand new podcast, This Is Chaos, with celebrity hairstylist Jacob Muller, which is produced by AIIMS Creator Hub, Carina spoke in detail about Paul’s shocking act. The fan favourite bride asserted that she never felt unsafe, but she was especially surprised by his reaction because of an unseen comment he had made about his own sex life during Confessions Week.

“He openly said that he was into swinging with his ex-partner,” she shared. “I thought the boundaries were okay [to discuss our past sex lives]. Then he was just so upset and dramatic about the whole Quavo situation. I was trying to suppress and calm him down. I kept apologising, he kept saying he was embarrassed that I openly said that.

“I said, ‘But you openly said, on camera, for a national television show, that you had slept with swingers and did swinging with your ex, so I didn’t think [me sharing that story] was a bad thing. Where’s the juxtaposition between this? What is okay and not okay? You’re allowed to do that, and I just have to accept it? But when I say something about my past sex life, you have a massive blow up?’.”

Carina went on to share that one of the show’s producers could hear them arguing in their apartment and encouraged Paul to go for a walk to calm down, but he was “still not happy” upon his return.

“He was angry, pacing and breathing heavily. I just said, ‘Let’s go to bed’,” she recalled. “So we’re lying in bed, I could hear him panting, and I asked, ‘What’s going on? Are you okay?’. He got up and said, ‘No, I’m not okay’.

“Then I got angry and turned over and said ‘I’m going to bed’. Oh my goodness, then I remember he got up, and that was it for him. Once I’d turned over, he got up and bang, bang. I was like, ‘Holy s**t, this has now gotten so much more serious’. I was freaking out thinking, how did it get from that comment to this situation?”

Carina admitted that watching the show on TV and seeing her downplay the incident made her feel like she had “100 per cent let down so many women and victims of domestic violence”.

“While it was all happening [during filming], I was processing it all and didn’t know what was happening. I thought he was coming from a place of having to create this drama for a television show,” she explained. “He hadn’t shown me any bad behaviour signs or signs of domestic violence at all [before that night], and it all happened so out of the blue.”

Carina said she had never experienced any form of domestic violence before going on MAFS, and is now trying to educate herself so she can identify signs for future relationships.
