When the final buzzer sounded in Montreal’s Game 5 loss to the Washington Capitals, the air inside the Bell Centre was thick with emotion. The Canadiens’ playoff hopes had been dashed, but the deeper story was the end of an era for veteran defenseman David Savard.
As his teammates and even opponents lined up to pay their respects, it was clear that Savard’s impact extended far beyond the scoresheet. For years, he has been a pillar of leadership, resilience, and mentorship within the Canadiens’ locker room—a presence felt by every player who has shared the ice with him.
In the aftermath of the game, attention naturally turned to what comes next for Savard. While his playing days may be over, the admiration and gratitude from those around him suggest that his journey with the Canadiens is far from finished. Captain Nick Suzuki’s postgame remarks offered a hint at the future, sparking intrigue and hope among fans eager to see Savard remain part of the organization.

The Montreal Canadiens’ loss in Game 5 of their first-round series against the Washington Capitals was an emotional one.
Beyond the team’s elimination, it marked the final NHL game for veteran defenseman David Savard.
The emotion was palpable following the team’s defeat, as Savard’s teammates all came to greet him.
Even the Canadiens’ opponents took time to pay tribute.
That goes to show just how respected Savard is across the league.
Nick Suzuki Opens Up About David Savard’s Future Plans
We’ve said it many times this season – David Savard is deeply appreciated by his teammates.
Not only has he been a big brother figure to many players, but he has also been an example of courage and perseverance.
It’s no surprise then that his presence in the locker room is cherished.
On that note, Nick Suzuki made an intriguing comment after Wednesday night’s game.
According to him, the newly retired Savard will remain involved with the organization next season.
Interesting!
“Savy has been incredible since joining the organization.
This guy, everything you can learn from him is one of a kind.
We’re definitely going to miss him a lot.
We wish he could have extended his career, but he’ll always be around.”
– Nick Suzuki
Much Like Paul Byron
This situation strongly reminds me of Paul Byron.
After playing only 27 games in the 2021-22 season, the small forward was often seen around the team and alongside the front office staff in their suite at the Bell Centre.
We found out why on September 20, 2023 – the day he officially announced his retirement – when the organization named him a player development consultant.
Since then, he’s helped the club’s young prospects transition to professional hockey.
Given how involved David Savard has been with the Canadiens’ younger players, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he follows a similar path as Byron.
