The milestone twenty-first season of The Block kicked off with a bang this week, with five brand new teams going head-to-head in Daylesford, Victoria. Not only do the contestants have to build houses from scratch that are identical in layout and size, but they’ve also been banned from staying up late doing all-nighters.

To make things even more challenging, the first room they each had to tackle was the bathroom. With all five teams having the exact same layout, timeframe, and suggested budget of $20,000, here’s what they each presented to the judges.

The judges described Emma and Ben’s bathroom as “a cracker of a room” and praised the texture, colour palette, sink size, and large wet area. However, they received criticism for the curved nib wall as the finishings were rough.

“We’re in Daylesford with so many undulating hills and dirt and mud. I feel like they’ve really been inspired by that,” Shaynna Blaze remarked.

Unfortunately, Han and Can couldn’t complete their bathroom in time for judging. Although they were commended for their basins and curved tiled wall, they were criticised for the styling, high vanity, horizontal towel rails, and curved door.

“I don’t believe this is what the Daylesford market is really going to respond to, aesthetically speaking,” Darren Palmer said.

The judges loved Britt and Taz’s colour palette, choice of French-pattern tiles, and the fact that they didn’t use floor-to-ceiling tiles. Similar to Han and Can, however, they weren’t pleased with the height of the vanity.

“I feel the execution, everything’s finished beautifully. There’s just a few little paint roll marks that you can see in the skylight,” Shaynna pointed out.

Darren admitted he was “besotted” by Sonny and Alicia’s bathroom and praised their colour palette and layout. They received some negative feedback on the cut of their tiles and the height of their vanity; however, the judges expressed excitement for their potential.

“I feel really strong about this couple in their execution and their planning. I feel really strong in their direction,” Shaynna said. “Look at where things line up, look at the styling, and they could blow it out of the park.”

Robby and Mat’s bathroom was described as “the Goldilocks room”, as it combined all of the features that worked “extremely well” for the other teams. They were also praised for having horizontal towel rails and a vanity with an appropriate height.

“For a week one job, this is some of the best work I’ve seen,” Marty Fox gushed.

Robby and Mat ultimately came out on top with a score of 26.5, beating Sonny and Alicia by just one point. As the winners of week one, they took home an extra $10,000 and subsequently added a massive target on their backs.

Meanwhile, Sonny and Alicia also received an additional $10,000 for spending the least amount of money on their bathroom.
