This year’s Back to Win season of MasterChef has been slammed for many reasons.

It’s no secret that this year’s season of MasterChef hasn’t been as well-received as past seasons. Many people have said that they had hoped this year we would see more amateur cooks in the kitchen, but the Back To Win format means we are seeing former contestants who have been on the show once or several times before attempt to win (again).
Some people have also failed to warm up to the new judging panel following Jock Zonfrillo’s shock passing and Melissa Leong’s exit. Andy Allen has stuck around after Jock’s death and Melissa’s exit and is a judge alongside fellow former contestant Poh Ling Yeow join French chef Jean-Christophe Novelli and food writer Sofia Levin.
MasterChef fans reveal why this year is the ‘least popular season’
Fans have taken to social media to air their frustration with the show, with one Reddit user writing, “This seems like the least popular season. At least by looking at the likes on Facebook & Instagram. I have even seen 400/500 likes on memes during previous seasons.
“Although I like some of the dishes cooked by contestants, this year feels very bland to me. Thoughts?”
Many others agreed with this, with one person responding, “I mean people competing for the third time is going to feel stale. Especially if the edit focusses on them.”
“Yes, this is exactly it,” another agreed.

“I don’t think they’ve done a very good job of presenting the contestants if you don’t already know them and hence people are not as invested,” a third said. “I usually have a strong favourite early on, but this season just ain’t it.
“I like new amateur cooks and I’m so over Laura and Callum! So I’m like ‘For the love of God, let Laura win this one, so I don’t have to see her again’”
Someone else shared their “issues” with the shows, saying, “Returnee season: Some of these people are very accomplished professionals and have no business competing against less-seasoned contestants from the most recent seasons.
They continued, “Open pantry/open garden: Stop having 10 of the same challenges per season: ‘Put yourself on a plate. You have a bazillion minutes, ready, set, go!’
“The same old guest chefs: New blood, please!”
Many also believe that they’ve had people like Gordon Ramsay on too much. Photo: Ten
“I don’t feel connected with any of the contestants,” another said. “Most of them look disinterested. Like they’re just going through the process. Most of them don’t have the excitement and zeal of 1st time contestants. Maybe I am jaded but I wish they had new contestants.”
“Sadly it is boring so far,” one viewer agreed. “No good team challenges. Focussing on the same (repeat) contestants. Very low stakes (low stakes rewards or punishments). The only interesting individual challenge thus far was late night snacks (and we only saw about half of the dishes). Too many judges some of whom simply aren’t adding any energy or dynamism.”
Many others agreed that “recycling contestants for a third time is boring”, while some suggested “they need to lose a judge”.
One person suggested, “Better format would have been going around Australia and bring in chefs from several restaurants that have shutdown.”
“I’d definitely watch that!” another responded.
Others, however, said that while they find the show boring, they’ll still continue to watch.
