However, following the Florida Panthers’ series-clinching Game 6 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, which secured their third consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final, this customary display of sportsmanship took an unexpected and contentious turn. As players began the ritual, cameras captured a visibly heated altercation unfolding between the two head coaches, Paul Maurice of the Panthers and Rod Brind’Amour of the Hurricanes, near their respective benches.
The intense verbal exchange between the two veteran bench bosses immediately drew the attention of the broadcast and onlookers, fueling speculation about the cause of such an uncharacteristic public disagreement. In a series already marked by high stakes, controversial plays—including a notable hit by Sam Bennett that echoed a previous incident—and palpable tension, this post-game confrontation added a dramatic final chapter, leaving many to wonder what words were exchanged to provoke such a reaction after the series’ conclusion. The Florida Panthers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 Game 6 and will officially move onto their 3rd straight Stanley Cup Final, but the tensions within the series didn’t die down as they were on display in the handshake line.
Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett delivered a dirty blow to goaltender Frederik Andersen’s head, in a similar situation as to what we witnessed in their past playoff round against Anthony Stolarz and the Toronto Maple Leafs, which lead to the goaltenders concussion and him leaving the arena in an ambulance.
To put icing on the cake, Bennett buried the empty net goal after he came out of the penalty box late in the third period to punch the Panthers’ ticket to their third straight Stanley Cup Final.
Tensions were high, and they led into the handshake line when coaches Paul Maurice and Rod Brind’Amour met each other by the benches.
Everything was seeming quite normal until the broadcast, and many noticed that an altercation was taking place between the two bench bosses.
The two longtime NHL coaches shared some words throughout their heated altercation after Game 5, and it appeared that there was a big disagreement.
Paul Maurice unveils why he and Rod Brind’Amour had handshake line disagreement
Maurice was quickly asked by the media during his post-game interview about what took place between himself and the Hurricanes’ head coach, and he spilled the details.
Maurice unveiled that it was his personal belief which caused the altercation, in which he asked Brind’Amour to not take part in the handshake line with his players. The Panthers’ head coach further explained to the media how there’s too many team employees on the ice, and the last thing he wants is the Hurricanes players to be shaking the hands of trainers or medical staff who they’ve never even seen before.
It appears on video that Brind’Amour disagreed, but still followed through with Maurice’s ask to not take part in the handshake line.
