The future of NHL expansion has once again become a hot topic, igniting passionate debate among fans and insiders alike. Following NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s recent press conference, the hockey world is buzzing with speculation about which cities could be next in line for a franchise.
While many in Quebec City still dream of seeing the Nordiques return, recent comments from both Bettman and seasoned journalist Renaud Lavoie have cast a shadow over those hopes. With Atlanta and Houston now emerging as frontrunners in the race for expansion, Quebec’s chances appear more uncertain than ever. As the league continues to weigh its options, the fate of professional hockey in Quebec City hangs in the balance, leaving fans to wonder if their long wait for NHL action will ever come to an end.

Following NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s press conference in the middle of June, the topic of expansion and the return of the Quebec Nordiques stirred plenty of discussion.
These are questions he was, of course, asked about – and we covered them in a previous article:
Following those remarks, TVA Sports journalist Renaud Lavoie added fuel to the fire.
Cities Identified for NHL Expansion and the Return of the Quebec Nordiques: Gary Bettman Comments and Renaud Lavoie Chimes In
After Bettman’s comments, journalist Renaud Lavoie reminded listeners that the cities of Atlanta and Houston appear to be in the running.
He spoke about it during a very interesting segment on BPM Sports radio – and yes, those cities clearly seem to be on the NHL’s radar.
It seems clear, at least in his view, what the NHL Commissioner truly thinks..
“I know that in Gary Bettman’s mind, Quebec probably isn’t very popular.” Renaud Lavoie
That’s tough to hear, but it seems to be the harsh reality.
Now fans hoping for the return of the Quebec Nordiques must hope a serious ownership group can change Gary Bettman’s and the NHL’s mind.
And in your opinion – could an NHL team truly succeed long-term in a city like Quebec?
Also, as we reported earlier this week, the first steps toward bringing the NHL back to Atlanta have already been taken:
