A lot has changed since Klay Thompson joined the Dallas Mavericks. Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Anthony Davis is out indefinitely with an injury he suffered in his debut game. And Kyrie Irving has been ruled out with a torn ACL.
Thompson could be forgiven for plotting his exit from a franchise that is quickly becoming one of the most dysfunctional in the NBA. However, when speaking to the media on March 10, the veteran floor spacer explained why he’s still committed to the Mavericks’ long-term plan.
“We still have big goals, we still want to make a run,” Thompson said. “The injuries have been awful, but I still love our team… It’s just a pleasure to go to battle with each and every person who suits up.
That’s all you can control. At the end of the day it’s your attitude and effort…I still believe in this franchise. I’m here for two more seasons after this, so I’d love to help them return to glory that they were brought to in 2011.”
The Mavericks acquired Thompson after they fell to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals. His floor spacing was supposed to unlock Doncic and Irving, especially in the playoffs when games become more contingent on halfcourt offense.
In truth, Thompson’s role hasn’t changed. Dallas still needs an elite three-point shooter to stretch the floor around Davis and Irving.
However, the concern is whether either star is capable of being back in the rotation and healthy by the time the 2026 postseason arrives.
Davis has struggled with availability since helping the Lakers secure the 2020 championship. There’s no telling how Irving’s fast-twitch style of play will be impacted by his ACL tear. Thompson is putting a significant amount of faith into two stars who have huge question marks hanging over them.
Before joining Dallas, Thompson was a one-team man. He has never been the type to jump ship or request a trade. He’s seen how quickly the narrative surrounding a team can change.
Dallas may look like a dumpster fire from the outside, but he’s likely taking a holistic view of things.
The Mavericks signed Thompson to help them win a championship. That goal hasn’t changed.
However, the path has become more difficult, but maybe that’s what Thompson needs to roll back the years and remind everyone why he’s got four championship rings at home.
