Today Show presenter Richard Wilkins was recently in London for the red carpet premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and found himself stuck in the middle of a very awkward situation during a live cross. Due to the time difference, Richard was filming his segment in the bustling city at midnight.

The veteran reporter, along with his producing and filming team, had set up to shoot the cross when two men came up to him and started interrupting them. To make matters worse for the presenter, the Brits had no idea who he was and mistook him for Baywatch star David Hasselhoff.

In a video shared on TikTok and Instagram, one of the young men is seen circling the camera crew and Richard on a Lime bike, while the person filming just repeatedly yells, “David Hasselhoff!”

The cameraman tells him, “Guys, we’re trying to work here,” and one of the women adds, “Don’t be disrespectful.”

Richard also asks, “Hey, mate, would you give us a break for five minutes, please?”

He adds, “We’re just trying to do our job, guys.”

In a second video, the men offer Richard some chips, with the man filming asking him, “David Hasselhoff, do you want a fry?”

Richard tried once more to de-escalate the situation, while one of his crew members told the men that they had the wrong person.

People were quick to comment on the video, with one person writing, “That ain’t David Hasselhoff.”

Others simply thought the video wasn’t funny, with one person adding bluntly, “Nobody laughed the first time you said it.”

“Not even funny, why are you laughing?” a third questioned.

“Grow up lads,” someone else added.

“Mate, shove off and let people do their job,” another agreed.

“It’s Richard Wilkins, a flipping Aussie Legend – back off,” one more person added.

Others, however, weren’t too kind to the filming crew, saying they were in the wrong for trying to film in a public space.

“It’s a public place, anything goes,” one person said.

“Sorry guys, we’re trying to film here… in a public street,” another said.

Thankfully, while Richard and his team seemed frustrated in the moment, he was able to laugh it off later, even commenting on the video, “Don’t hassle the Hoff!”

Richard’s Today Show Extra colleague David Campbell jokingly responded, “Loved it when you were on Knight Rider.”

“You gotta laugh,” another said.

“Oh dear Richard! Is fame a bummer at times!” a third said. “But the joke’s on him! When did David have an Aussie accent!”

“Must be a little flattering being called David Hasselhoff, though,” someone else joked.

“That is hilarious, there are a lot worse things than being call the Hoff,” another agreed.
