Today’s Karl Stefanovic has joined his colleagues in bidding farewell to Clint Stanaway following his announcement that he will be leaving Channel 9 after nearly 25 years with the network. The popular sports and news journalist, best known for being the host of Weekend Today and the weekend sports presenter on 9News Melbourne, revealed on Tuesday that he plans to focus on his full-time radio role as newsreader on Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren.

Clint shared an Instagram post announcing the news with a “heavy heart”, admitting that he is incredibly grateful for his TV experience but wants to have “a better work/life balance”. The post has since been flooded with supportive messages from his Channel 9 colleagues, including his weekday counterpart Karl Stefanovic.

“No one works harder. Great broadcaster. Great human. You deserve every success,” he wrote.

Sarah Abo also sent her well wishes, commenting: “We’ll miss you so much, superstar. Best of the best, how lucky we’ve been to work alongside you – and continue to see you succeed.”

“We are crying my friend,” A Current Affair’s Allison Langdon said. “Happy for you but hard to imagine the place with you, that charm and smile… go well legend. We love ya”.

“What an innings Clint!” former Today host Lisa Wilkinson shared. “Good on you for choosing balance, and well done on all your fine work for Nine over the years. It was such a pleasure to share some of that time with you – one of the true gentlemen of TV. And hardest workers!”

Meanwhile, Clint’s Weekend Today co-host Alison Piotrowski wrote: “A truly outstanding innings and a well-deserved weekend sleep in… but selfishly I will miss you so much!”

Clint’s career history

Clint began his television career with WIN in Bendigo before joining 9News as a reporter in 2005. He later landed the role of weekend sports presenter on 9News and became the sports presenter on Weekend Today in 2019.

Four years later, Clint was announced as the new co-host of Weekend Today alongside Jayne Azzopardi, who has since been replaced by Alison Piotrowski.

He has also been the newsreader for the Melbourne breakfast radio show Jase & Lauren since 2021, when they were on KIIS, and stayed with the team when they moved to Nova in 2024.

‘I was burnt out’

Clint addressed his exit on Jase & Lauren on Wednesday morning, admitting that he was “burnt out” after working both radio and TV for the past few years.

I’m relieved, because I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. I needed to make a decision, because looking back on how I was feeling and where my head was at, I was burnt out,” he said.

“I tried to juggle everything for so long. I think I did a really good job of it for so long. But I think, I always knew in my heart of hearts, it had an expiry date, and I’m now at a stage where I need to put myself in a position where I can get my life back.”

Who will replace Clint Stanaway on Weekend Today?

Channel 9 has yet to reveal who will replace Clint Stanaway as host of Weekend Today when he wraps up at the end of the year; however, there are a few names expected to be in the mix.

Dan Anstey has been the weather presenter on Weekend Today since 2022, and filled in for Karl Stefanovic as co-host of Today alongside Samantha Armytage in December 2024. Meanwhile, Tim Davies and Gavin Morris have also both filled in as co-hosts of Weekend Today in recent years.
