EXCLUSIVE: Exactly halfway into the season Robby and Mat produced “the worst room they’ve ever delivered” during the entire Block competition.

But with their ‘Block curse’ they often joke about, they almost saw it coming.

When they win one week, they flop the next. The judges were in shock to find their unfinished rumpus room, coming off the back of their winning living and dining space.

“How do you go from having one of the best weeks in Block history… and then, you have to live in a room like this?” a perplexed Marty said at the time.

Now after delivering the highest-scoring backyard (minus House 1’s bonus point) would history be repeating itself come front yard reveals?

After all, the boys are already in a panic after their shock $34,000 bill disaster, leaving them with little to no money in the final week.

“They need a front yard to sell the home. You don’t have a front yard, or if it’s left like this, they’re not going to win The Block,” Dan warned them.

Speaking with Freedom stylist Serena, Robby and Mat looked back at exactly what they did right during Living and Dining Week.

With a little inspiration, who knows, maybe they’ll break their Block ‘curse’ once and for all in the final days.

“Thank you so much for everything over the past few weeks,” Mat said to Serena.

When it came to the hero piece of their winning living room, their stunning white modular lounge, Mat said he “fell in love with it as soon as we saw it”.

After all, if there’s one piece of furniture that anchors a living space, it’s the sofa.

Of course, love at first sight isn’t the only thing to consider when choosing the perfect lounge or delivering a stunning space.

Together with Serena the boys shared their biggest tips.

Define your colour palette

Did you know Robby and Mat’s Sorrento lounge comes in 17 different colours? (20 if you choose leather!). Choosing a colour however, was easy for Mat who played into their consistent palette of beige, neutral and earthy tones.

If you’ve opted for a neutral base, like the boys, you can introduce colour through styling.

Draw colours from hero pieces like artwork and add pops of colour through cushions and throws (these are much more easier to update than the colour of your lounge!).

Play with texture

Think about not only the texture of your lounge but how it interacts with the layers around it, like rugs, throws, cushions and even arm chairs.

Introducing different textures, such a chunky knit, a soft velvet or a natural weave rug is the secret to creating depth, warmth and that irresistible cosy feel to your entire living zone.

Versatility is key

Whether you have a large space you need to fill or a small space you need to maximise, the size and configuration of your lounge can make a huge difference in both flow and functionality.

Modular lounges are a dream for this, offering the versatility to be reconfigured to suit different spaces and needs down the track.

With extra modular pieces, Robby and Mat’s lounge can now fit up to 12 people! Plus the L-shape configuration really opens up the space.
