Susanna Reid appeared to make a sarcastic dig towards Ed Balls today as his wife Yvette Cooper joined Good Morning Britain – without him taking part in the interview
Susanna Reid was heard making a ‘sarcastic jibe’ to her co-host Ed Balls during Tuesday morning’s Ranvir Singh – as they announced his wife, and Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper would be joining them for an interview.
Yvette joined the show on Tuesday morning to speak about new plans to tackle the immigration crisis.
Speaking on the ‘one in one out policy’ which was said to take place in July, Yvette said “it is on track and it has started” when asked by Susanna why it wasn’t up and running yet.

However, as usual, Susanna was doing the interview solo – but it wasn’t always that way. After receiving Ofcom complains – in what people claimed was a ‘bias’ interview with his wife last year, ITV said they “wouldn’t do it again.”
Introducing the segment earlier this morning, Susanna said: “The Home Secretary will be on the programme at 8.30.”
She then continued to Ed: “Obviously, your other half, and therefore when we say we’ll be doing the interview, I’ll be doing the interview with the Home Secretary,” as she turned back to the camera and nodded – before handing over to Ranvir Singh.
She didn’t hold back during the interview – as one wrote on X: “I’m enjoying Susanna getting feisty with Ed Balls’ wife,” as Andrew Pierce joked about the ‘roasting’ after the interview.
During the interview, Susanna seemed to get irate with Yvette Cooper, telling her to ‘talk straight.’ Asking what she was going to do about Article 8, Susanna said: “Your opposition wants to jump the ECHR all together. What are you going to do with that Article 8 which is so contentious – it leads to headlines about children who don’t like chicken nuggets in other countries being allowed to say.
“Just speak plainly about what your going to do and the change you’re going to make,” Susanna firmly said.

“It’s basically changing the rules in the UK with effectively tell the courts how Article 8 should be interpreted in the UK. It’s how international law should be interpreted in the UK,” as she carried on – Susanna was seen interrupting as it was clear the interview had ran over.
“I’ll leave the viewers to decide if they think that’s fair, thank you very much indeed,” Susanna ended.
It comes after people took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to air their concerns. “#GMB is Ed Balls going to interview his wife Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary this morning…is it allowed.. where’s OFCOM?” one questioned on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Whenever the Home Secretary joins the show – her husband Ed Balls is noticeably missing from the show. It comes a year after controversary, when ITV’s chief executive spoke out to defend Ed’s interview with his wife, but insisted they would never do it again.
During the interview, Kate Garraway was joined by Ed Balls to interview Yvette about the government’s response to violent unrest in parts of the UK.
“It was a very, very tricky morning, there was a national emergency almost being called, and so we got very short notice that the home secretary was coming on the show,” ITV chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said after the show received over 16,000 Ofcom complaints.
“And actually Ofcom just ruled, but amazingly no-one has picked up on the fact, that Ofcom are not pursuing these complaints, because they believe it’s fair, balanced and impartial.
During a tense exchange on Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid couldn’t resist making a slyly sarcastic dig at her co-host Ed Balls while pressing Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper on the government’s handling of immigration. The moment, which aired live, quickly caught the attention of viewers who noticed Reid’s sharp quip and the awkward reaction that followed.
The discussion centred on Labour’s position regarding immigration policy, with Reid pressing Cooper for clearer answers on how the party would address rising concerns over asylum seekers, border security, and the pressures on local communities. As Cooper outlined Labour’s plans, Reid interjected with a pointed remark that left her fellow presenter Balls in the spotlight. With her trademark dry wit, Reid said: “I’m sure Ed could give you some advice on sticking to the party line—he’s had plenty of practice.”
The studio fell briefly silent as Balls, a former Labour MP and Cabinet minister, smiled wryly at the jibe. Known for his resilience when it comes to political sparring, he responded with a chuckle, though viewers couldn’t help but notice a flicker of discomfort. Social media erupted almost instantly, with clips of the exchange circulating widely. Many fans praised Reid for her fearless approach, while others felt the remark veered into playful but slightly barbed territory.
Reid then pivoted back to Cooper, pushing her on whether Labour would commit to reducing net migration figures or simply managing them more efficiently. The Shadow Home Secretary attempted to emphasize Labour’s strategy of fixing what she described as the Conservatives’ “chaotic” system, highlighting the need for stronger border security and faster processing of asylum claims. Yet Reid remained persistent, questioning whether this would satisfy public concerns or simply maintain the status quo.
Viewers were divided in their response to the moment. Some praised Reid for keeping the pressure on and not allowing Cooper to give vague answers, while others felt her comment toward Balls was unnecessarily cheeky. One user on X commented: “Susanna Reid doesn’t hold back—Ed Balls looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him up!” Another wrote: “That was savage but hilarious—classic Susanna.”
Balls himself appeared to take the incident in good humour, even later referencing it in a light-hearted way when the programme shifted topics. But the exchange underscored Reid’s reputation for tough questioning, even when it comes at the expense of those sitting beside her. The incident also highlighted the tricky balancing act politicians face on live television, where both their policies and personalities are placed under the microscope.
