Whether you’re a celebrity or a regular contestant, The Amazing Race is known for putting couples’ relationships to the test. On top of the pre-existing stress of travelling in a foreign country, teams must work together to solve riddles, interact with locals, and take part in challenges that are both physically and mentally demanding.

It’s because of this that the show’s host, Beau Ryan, told The Project’s Georgie Tunny in 2023 that he would never recommend contestants compete alongside their partner. Fast forward two years, when Georgie herself was asked to take part in the series, she immediately said ‘yes’ to racing around the world with her fiancé, Rob Mills.

“Beau said his number one piece of advice was, ‘Don’t do it with your partner’. He was like, ‘I’m not sure you’d survive, it’d be crazy’,” Georgie tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I was just immediately like, Robert, we’re doing it! It’s the ultimate test! I actually don’t think I could have done it with anyone else.”

Georgie and Rob, who make up one of 13 teams competing in the upcoming star-studded season, admit they were definitely nervous about how the experience would impact their seven-year relationship.

“I was worried about how much resilience Georgie would actually have,” Rob shares, joking about how he’s competed on both Australian Idol and Dancing With The Starswhereas she often struggles to get out of bed in the morning to go to the gym.

“She never quit once, and I couldn’t be more proud. Not that I wanted to be wrong, but she was absolutely incredible. She just didn’t let up on one of the challenges, just kept pushing through the whole time, and I couldn’t have been more proud.”

Why Georgie and Rob wanted to do The Amazing Race

Georgie reveals that a big part of their decision to join The Amazing Race was to make up for lost time in their relationship due to their demanding careers.

“The race itself was so wonderful for us because that was the longest, most concentrated time that we’d spent together for like, two years,” she remarks.

“Robert had been touring for like 18 months, and I was flying around everywhere with The Project. We had actually very little time together, so we decided, why not just go into the hardest competition that you can do, just to really put a stress test on the relationship?”

‘We’re so lucky’

Rob adds that he was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to not only get paid to travel with his fiancée, but become friends with an “awesome” group of people.

“I think it’s the greatest show to get asked to go on. You’re flown around the world, and then your day is basically just doing challenges. It was honestly the best,” he says.

“Some of the places that we went to were places that we never dreamed of going, some we’ll probably never go back to, and some we will definitely go back to. We’re so lucky.”
