The losses have come quickly for the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff since they were eliminated from the NFL playoffs.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have both already landed head coaching jobs with other teams.
Defensive line coach Terrell Williams also left to become the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.
Luckily, it seems the Lions might be able to start replacing their departing coaches as quickly as they left with it being reported that they have already found one replacement.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers run game coordinator/defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers is expected to become the next defensive line coach for the Lions.
If you’re looking for somebody to directly address a couple of the D-line’s biggest issues from this past season, then it’s hard to do better than Rodgers.
The Lions were 11th-worst in the league in yards per carry allowed, giving up 4.5 yards per carry. They were also 10th-worst in sacks with 37.
Those are two problems that are largely tied to the defensive line.
Rodgers’ Bucs were ninth in the league in yards allowed per carry at 4.3. In 2023 they were eighth, allowing just 3.8 yards per carry.
Their sack numbers were just as strong. The Bucs’ defense finished seventh in the league with 46 sacks.
They also had a solid pressure rate, which was one of the strengths of the Lions’ defense this season. The Bucs’ finished ninth in the NFL with a pressure rate of 24.3%.
It’s not going to be easy for the Lions to replace all of the talent they’ve been losing from their coaching staff, but landing Rodgers looks like a pretty good way to start.
