Via an article recently published on the TVA Sports website, Jean-Charles Lajoie spoke about the Montreal Canadiens from a different perspective. He suggested that the Habs should adopt a seller’s approach ahead of the NHL trade deadline, which is set for March 7.
However, he surprised many by stating that if he were in Kent Hughes’ position, he would keep defenseman David Savard.
Due to Kaiden Guhle’s injury, no one would be shocked if the veteran Quebec defenseman finished the season in Montreal. If the team finds itself back in playoff contention at some point, having veterans is crucial.
However, what truly caught people off guard in Lajoie’s comments was that he wouldn’t hesitate to offer a new contract to the now 34-year-old defenseman.
A new two or three-year contract for David Savard in Montreal?
Here’s what he said:
«I would keep Savard with the team and offer him a new two or three-year deal at a lower salary, entrusting him with the task of leading the organization’s rebuilding project.
You can never have too many good veterans who are happy and aware of the stakes in a locker room.»
Jean-Charles Lajoie
Even though the outspoken host’s comments make sense, it would still be quite surprising if the Canadiens kept David Savard beyond the 2024-25 season.
Without taking anything away from him, his presence in the lineup could delay the arrival of young talents like David Reinbacher or Logan Mailloux, who are pushing from behind to earn a spot on the big club.
Additionally, even if it’s for a short-term contract, Savard has slowed down somewhat this season and is not immune to injuries.
It is therefore more logical for Kent Hughes to keep him until the end of the season and let him test free agency next summer-unless, of course, he receives a very enticing offer for his services.
