The Amazing Race Australia viewers were left baffled watching Monday night’s premiere when one team was eliminated under strange circumstances. Comedian Ed Kavalee and his wife, fitness trainer Tiffani Hall, became the first contestants sent home after suffering a time penalty for not finishing a challenge.

The couple struggled to complete their Detour and had to sit at the Pit Stop for 20 minutes before they could check in, allowing other teams to overtake them. Their penalty got down to 17 seconds before Balinese princess Lindy Klim and her daughter Stella were shown arriving, and they were subsequently eliminated.

Many fans have since taken to social media to criticise the show’s editing and question the accuracy of Ed and Tiffani’s timer, as Lindy and Stella’s run from their car to meet Beau on the mat would’ve likely taken longer than 17 seconds.

“The timer was on 18 secs before that other team arrived. How did they get there so fast? So bloody annoying,” one person wrote, while another added, “There was something fishy about that timer!”

“I want an audit on that timer clock. Apparently, the Klims got out of the car and made it to the mat within 19 seconds,” a third remarked, followed by someone else who said, “I know right, 18 secs left and the girls just randomly show up and survive”.

Fans ‘shocked’ by Ed and Tiffani’s elimination

Meanwhile, many people admitted they were “shocked” to see Ed and Tiffani leave so early in the competition, especially due to a time penalty.

“Wow, that’s so unexpected seeing Ed and Tiffani go so early on,” one fan shared, with another writing, “It’s such a shame that Ed Kavalee and Tiff are leaving the race after only one episode!”.

“Never would have expected Ed and Tiff Hall to be the first team out. Would have loved to see more of them on the race,” someone else remarked.

“That’s actually pretty shocking that Ed and Tiff are the first out,” a different user replied, while another said, “Waited six months for Tiff to be back on our screens and she’s GONE ON THE FIRST EPISODE”.

Ed’s surprising salary revealed

Despite being the first team eliminated, it’s been reported that Ed Kavalee was one of this year’s highest-paid contestants.

According to PEDESTRIAN.TV, Ed, Melissa Leong, Gretel Killeen, and Rob Mills each received $100,000 for their involvement on the show.

This suggests that, unlike other reality shows where contestants’ salaries are determined by how long they remain in the competition, Channel 10 paid each of this year’s cast members a one-off appearance fee.

Beau Ryan’s surprising salary

Meanwhile, Beau revealed on The Kyle & Jackie O Show in 2021 that he was paid a whopping $800,000 to host the reboot of The Amazing Race Australia.

TV experts later clarified that this was ‘part of a multi-year deal’ with Channel 10, with Beau later competing on the 2022 season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and hosting both Top Gear and the reboot of Gladiators Australia in 2024.
