As the Montreal Canadiens continue their search for a reliable second-line center to support Nick Suzuki, the hopes of many fans have once again been dashed. The offseason is always a time of swirling rumors and mounting anticipation, with names of potential targets circulating widely among the hockey faithful. Matt Duchene, a player long linked to Montreal and seen as an ideal fit for the team’s pressing needs, has been at the center of much speculation. His proven track record as a top-six forward and his previous near-signing with the Canadiens made him a tantalizing option for the organization’s management and supporters alike.

However, in a development that is sure to disappoint many, Duchene appears to have made up his mind about his future. As the landscape of NHL free agency begins to take shape, the Canadiens find themselves facing yet another setback in their pursuit of elite talent down the middle. With the list of available centers growing shorter, the pressure is mounting on the team’s front office to find solutions and ensure the roster is ready for the challenges ahead. The coming weeks promise to be crucial as Montreal weighs its options and considers what steps to take next.

We know that the Montreal Canadiens need a second-line center behind Nick Suzuki.

We also know that Matt Duchene was a popular option-notably because he almost signed in Montreal a few years ago and because he’s an excellent top-6 center, but everything now indicates that his name can be scratched off the list.

Matt Duchene Has Decided He Wants to Stay With the Dallas Stars

Another disappointment for many Habs fans.

The forward has made his decision, and you can’t really blame him for wanting some stability at this stage in his career.

Indeed, we’re starting to see more and more players announce similar intentions.

With this news, the rumors linking Duchene to Montreal will likely fade away.

Now 34 years old, Matt Duchene tallied 82 points in 82 games this season, serving as the Dallas Stars’ second-line center-but he struggled more during the playoffs.

Over the last few seasons, he’s recorded 65, 56, and 86 points.

Back in 2019, he almost signed with the Montreal Canadiens before ultimately choosing the Nashville Predators, following a 70-point season in 73 games.

Clearly, the pool of truly available centers for Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes is shrinking, and it feels like Kirby Dach might be getting one last shot at claiming that role.

And if it were your decision, what would you do?
