Tensions are simmering in Montreal’s hockey community, and this time, the spark isn’t coming from the ice—it’s erupting online.

A seemingly routine debate about the Canadiens’ second-line center position has unexpectedly escalated into a public spat between two prominent figures: respected journalist Renaud Lavoie and former Canadiens scout Grant McCagg.

What began as an optimistic scouting report on rising talent Oliver Kapanen quickly devolved into a war of words, with pointed social media exchanges drawing in fans and insiders alike.

The controversy highlights not only the high stakes surrounding the Canadiens’ roster decisions but also the passionate, sometimes volatile, nature of hockey discourse in Montreal.

As opinions clash and tempers flare, all eyes are now on the team’s next moves—and whether Kapanen, or another contender, will ultimately seize the coveted role. With the season approaching and the pressure mounting, this is one storyline that’s sure to keep the hockey world buzzing.

We had a bit of drama on social media involving journalist Renaud Lavoie and former Montreal Canadiens scout Grant McCagg.

Following a bold comment from McCagg – who believes Oliver Kapanen might be the Canadiens’ solution for the second-line center role – Renaud Lavoie reposted it with an eye-roll.

After this “comment” from the TVA Sports journalist, former Canadiens scout Grant McCagg immediately clapped back.

Former Montreal Canadiens scout Grant McCagg shares his thoughts with Renaud Lavoie

The original post was as follows..

“Do not rule out Kapanen playing with Demidov and Bolduc. I lay out the reasons why it’s a possibility in this video scouting report on Kapanen”

– Grant McCagg

And to Renaud Lavoie, McCagg immediately responded with this:

“Hard to argue with your response. Thanks for your spectacular contribution to the argument”

– McCagg, clearly irritated with Renaud Lavoie

The post triggered a flood of comments afterward.. including this one:

To which McCagg replied that it was disappointing coming from a fellow colleague – especially one he’s never crossed paths with, neither in person nor online.

Long story short, it’s clear that Renaud Lavoie isn’t too keen on the idea of Oliver Kapanen being the Canadiens’ second-line center next season.

If it ever does happen, and if Kapanen ends up surprising everyone, something tells us Renaud will be reminded of it.

Definitely a story to keep an eye on!

Personally, I really believe that job goes to Kirby Dach – at least to start the season – and Martin St-Louis can make adjustments as needed.

Otherwise, names like Nazem Kadri and Jack Roslovic are still available as we recently reported.
