The speculation surrounding Nikolaj Ehlers and the Montreal Canadiens has reached a fever pitch, with rumors intensifying as free agency approaches. Ehlers, a dynamic winger for the Winnipeg Jets, has long been linked to Montreal, and both fans and insiders sense a mutual interest that could soon turn into reality. However, a recent bombshell report from The Athletic’s James Mirtle has thrown a wrench into the Canadiens’ plans—and sparked heated debate across the hockey world.

According to Mirtle, Ehlers could command as much as $9 million per year on the open market, a figure that far exceeds initial expectations. While his speed, scoring ability, and consistent production would make him a prized addition to Montreal’s top six, the staggering price tag has many wondering if he’s worth the investment—especially considering the Canadiens’ pressing need for a true top-line center, not another winger. With Ehlers set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, the next few weeks promise to be crucial as Montreal weighs whether to break the bank for one of the league’s most electrifying forwards.

For several months now, the name of forward Nikolaj Ehlers has been circulating around the Montreal Canadiens.

It feels like he’s genuinely interested in signing in Montreal-he’ll be an unrestricted free agent and free as a bird on July 1st-and it also seems like Kent Hughes is interested.

However, the excellent James Mirtle has just revealed something that may cool off many fans (regarding the possibility of acquiring Ehlers).

James Mirtle: “Nikolaj Ehlers could reach 9 million on the open market”

At 6-7 million he was very appealing, but at 9 million per year, despite the significant increase in the NHL salary cap, it’s starting to get pretty expensive.

The Canadiens would clearly have to pay 9 million per year to sign Nikolaj Ehlers

At that price, would you do it?

Ehlers, age 29, is a very fast 6-foot, 172-pound forward and was the 9th overall pick by the Winnipeg Jets in 2014 (1st round).

He recorded 63 points in 69 games this season, including 24 goals, after putting up 61 points in 82 games last season.

Ehlers would be an incredible addition to the Canadiens’ top six, but he would also come with a hefty salary.

Paying 9 million per year for a center of this caliber-I think I’d personally be willing to do it, especially considering the Habs’ needs-but the issue here is that Nikolaj Ehlers is a winger.

A situation to watch closely over the next two weeks.
