I completely agree with Félix Forget.. It’s unusual to hear something like that from someone like Engels.

On the latest episode of Tony Marinaro’s podcast, Eric Engels was asked about the Canadiens’ power play in general and even though the conversation had nothing to do with Laine at first, he ended up saying this:

“The Habs still have cap space issues. We’ll see what happens with Patrik Laine.”

Given that the Canadiens are currently over the NHL’s salary cap, and considering Laine earns nearly $9 million per year, it’s reasonable to wonder if Kent Hughes is working behind the scenes to trade the Finnish forward.

Did Engels learn that there’s a real possibility Laine could be traded soon?

It’s possible – and this situation is definitely one to watch.

Personally, I can really see Zachary Bolduc playing on the Canadiens’ second line with Kirby Dach and Ivan Demidov, and I can see Ivan Demidov taking Laine’s spot on the power play.

So yes, it’s pretty costly to pay someone $9 million a year (or close to it) to be on the third line and second power play unit.
