The Montreal Canadiens are making headlines once again, this time with a surprising shift in their approach to forward Kirby Dach’s role.

Recent reports from respected analysts and insiders suggest that Dach, once a fixture on the team’s top power play unit, is set to start the upcoming season focusing solely on his 5-on-5 responsibilities.

This adjustment, which aligns with recent comments from executive Jeff Gorton, signals a new direction for both Dach and the team’s special teams strategy.

With a revamped power play lineup featuring rising stars and established talents, the Canadiens appear determined to optimize every aspect of their roster. As fans and experts debate the merits of this bold move, all eyes will be on Dach to see how he adapts to his new assignment—and whether this decision will unlock even greater potential in his game.

The evolving situation promises to be a major talking point as the season approaches, adding another layer of intrigue to Montreal’s preparations.

According to several experts, the Montreal Canadiens appear to have changed their mind regarding forward Kirby Dach’s role.

It seems his time on the power play is over – at least for now – so he can focus on his 5-on-5 play.

This aligns with the most recent interview given by Jeff Gorton, during which he also discussed the team’s goaltending plan, including Samuel Montembeault and Jacob Fowler (who could arrive earlier than expected).

Kirby Dach Reportedly Off the Power Play – At Least to Start the Season

Martin St-Louis will have plenty of options for both power play units, and names have already been identified by experts like Frank Seravalli and the site Daily Faceoff.

That’s the current buzz, and DFO seems to believe it too.

See the two projected units:

This would mark quite a shift for Kirby Dach, who was used on the first power play unit last season – but it’s probably for the best.

The 10 players currently projected to be on the Montreal Canadiens’ power play to start the season are:

First Unit:
Juraj Slafkovsky – Nick Suzuki – Ivan Demidov
Cole Caufield – Lane Hutson

Second Unit:
Brendan Gallagher – Alex Newhook – Zachary Bolduc
Patrik Laine – Noah Dobson

In my opinion, the only player Dach could potentially replace is Newhook.

All the other players (the remaining nine) are very likely to be on the power play when the season begins.

The other debatable name is Gallagher, but in his role in front of the net, I believe he’s more useful than Dach on the second unit.

The only one who might displace Gallagher in that net-front role is possibly Josh Anderson – but not Dach.

And you – what’s your opinion on all of this?
