As the 2025-2026 NHL season kicks off, a sense of restless ambition hangs in the air over Montreal. The city’s beloved Canadiens have already made bold moves in the off-season, but it’s clear that general manager Kent Hughes isn’t satisfied just yet. While other teams settle into their new lineups, Hughes remains a whirlwind of activity, determined to address one critical need that could change the team’s fortunes.
Rumors swirl through the hockey world about secret phone calls, late-night negotiations, and persistent efforts to land a missing piece of the puzzle. Insiders hint at a high-stakes chase for a key player who could elevate Montreal’s chances, but the market has proven to be a formidable obstacle—especially for those seeking a certain position. Despite the challenges, trusted voices in the industry confirm that Hughes is far from finished and may be closer to a breakthrough than anyone suspects.
What exactly is driving the Canadiens’ relentless pursuit? Which names are being whispered behind closed doors, and how might the next big move reshape the team’s future? The answers remain tantalizingly out of reach, but one thing is certain: every fan will want to stay tuned as the drama unfolds.

Even though the 2025-2026 season has begun, Kent Hughes has no intention of resting when it comes to trying to improve his team.
The general manager of the Montreal Canadiens acquired Noah Dobson and Zachary Bolduc on the trade market during the off-season, but it’s well known that his main goal was to find a second center to support Nick Suzuki.
You can’t say he hasn’t tried everything, reaching out left and right, but it must be admitted that the market for centers was rather tough for NHL general managers this summer.
However, according to Darren Dreger, Kent Hughes is still looking for that rare gem.
Darren Dreger Confirms Kent Hughes Is Still Working the Phones to Acquire a Second-Line Center
The veteran TSN journalist, who regularly contributes to the Barn Burner podcast, mentioned that the former player agent is very active with his counterparts around the NHL to add a quality center to his roster.
“I think Canadiens GM Kent Hughes… he’s gonna try and do something, he’s still looking for that Number 2 center.”

Without necessarily naming other targets for the Canadiens, Dreger spoke about the situation surrounding Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri.
The 35-year-old veteran is of interest to several teams, including the Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, but any team that wants to acquire him will have to overpay compared to his actual value, according to the insider.
Kadri will also earn a salary of $7 million per season through 2028-2029.
One thing’s clear – Kent Hughes isn’t done yet, and the Canadiens could still make noise on the trade market.
