For one of the rare times since the announcement of Ivan Demidov’s signing by the Montreal Canadiens, a concern has surfaced. It comes from former Habs goaltender José Théodore.
Speaking on 98.5 Sports, Théodore voiced a concern he has that’s been circulating about the young sensation.
We know the hype is out of control, we know Demidov is eagerly awaited in Montreal, and we know there will inevitably be a lot of pressure on his shoulders. In that sense, Théodore draws a parallel with Alex Kovalev’s arrival in Montreal back in the day.
José Théodore expresses concerns about Ivan Demidov’s arrival
Here’s what he said:
“Where do you put him?
On the second line and the second power play unit?
Do you take out a player who earned it, who worked all season to be there?
You still have to be careful with how he’s used.
You can’t go upsetting a veteran or someone who worked through 70 games to earn their spot on the second power play unit, to be in the top two lines, and now you have the kid arriving from Moscow, playing 42 games in a season, and you’re handing him the big stage right away?
I’m not saying he shouldn’t be given a spot, I’m just saying Martin St-Louis.. the organization will need to be careful with how they manage him.”
– José Théodore
A tight-knit locker room that can help Ivan Demidov and Martin St-Louis in his decision
Personally, I think the locker room is so united right now, and the guys care so much about what’s best for the team at all costs, that it wouldn’t be an issue, but I understand the point.

And you, do you think Martin St-Louis should be cautious before pushing aside a veteran in favor of Demidov?
