The Block contestants worked harder than ever this week to renovate what’s often referred to as the biggest selling point of a house: the main bedroom and walk-in wardrobe. While each team was given the same timeframe and suggested budget of $15,000, they had free rein of the room’s layout and orientation.

The judges had mixed feedback for this year’s cast, with one team’s room scoring the first 10 of the season and another being declared as not fit for auction. Interior designer Chris Carroll, director of TLC Interiors, has also shared his thoughts with Yahoo Lifestyle and revealed why he thinks one team’s room is the worst he’s ever seen on the reality show.

Emma and Ben continued their streak as the most consistent couple on this year’s season, delivering an impressive main bedroom and luxurious walk-in wardrobe. The judges praised their burgundy colour palette, pitched roof, and eye for detail, and Chris believes their house is the most harmonious so far.

“Sadly, there’s little consistency week to week, so it constantly changes. [But] I’d say based on what’s been presented so far, Emma and Ben are doing the best,” he says.

Marty Fox didn’t hold back when criticising Han and Can’s room, admitting the colour palette made him “want to vomit” and he didn’t think he would be able to sell it. Darren Palmer urged the couple to repaint the room so it’s less “abrasive” and “intense”, and Chris couldn’t agree more.

“Han and Can’s main bedroom is one of the worst I’ve seen in recent memory on The Block,” he declares. “The colour palette was juvenile, the room felt a bit cheap, and there was no harmony whatsoever. A kid’s room, sure, but not a main bedroom in what’s meant to be a luxury property.”

The judges glided into Britt and Taz’s room and were immediately impressed by Britt’s styling and design abilities. They criticised their rough paintwork on the ceiling, but Chris agrees it was a near-perfect room.

“Their bedroom had personality, felt calm and inviting, and the scale of the room was perfect – nothing was too oversized and every pocket was adequately furnished. There’s very little you’d change in there,” he says.

The judges commended Sonny and Alicia’s lighting plan but slammed their painting, layout, and “corporate” styling. They were also very critical of their walk-in robe, saying it didn’t suit Daylesford “at all”, which Chris believes is why they didn’t win.

“Sonny and Alicia’s main bedroom should have won, if it was judged alone, but the robe was so undercooked and didn’t feel luxurious in the slightest. Too cramped, too basic,” he says. “The layout change is neither here nor there; it doesn’t make the space feel better or worse, so it’s kind of a case of ‘why bother?’.”

Following their divisive kids’ bedrooms, Robby and Mat received praise for their styling and painting in their main bedroom and walk-in robe. The judges questioned their decision not to include a fireplace, making them the only house without one in the bedroom, but Chris believes it’s a non-issue.

“A bedroom doesn’t need a fireplace; Robby and Mat don’t deserve points deducted because of that,” he says. “These are modern homes, give the rooms ducted heating and call it a day. A fireplace is a ‘nice’ but definitely not a ‘necessary’. Their walk-in-robe was at a professional level – the best of the week. But sadly, the main bedroom let them down; everything was too small, and it didn’t inspire.”

Ultimately, it was Britt and Taz who took out the win with a score of 29, with Emma and Ben coming in second place for the third week in a row with 28 points.

Britt and Taz won $10,000 for winning this week’s room reveal and received an additional $10,000 for being scored a perfect 10 by Darren. They were also announced as the winners of the $10,000 Commonwealth Bank award for spending the least amount of money, giving them a total cash prize of $30,000.
