Neighbours fans have been left heartbroken as actor Matt Wilson announced his farewell from the iconic soap this week.

The hunky star, 37, who made headlines playing fan favourite gay character Aaron Brennan on the show, shared a video of his last day filming on the Ramsay Street set.

Matt, who made his debut on the long-running serial in 2015, appeared emotional in the clip, as he was seen hugging and kissing cast and crew members.

‘That’s a wrap for Aaron on Ramsay St,’ Matt wrote in his Instagram post.

He also paid a sweet tribute to fans who filled his message board with greetings of support ahead of his final exit from the show on Tuesday.

‘Reading some of the comments of the last week has made me all warm and fuzzy inside,’ he said. ‘In a G-rated way of course. Thank you.’

Matt made history on Neighbours when his character Aaron wed David Tanaka, played by actor Takaya Honda, in the first same-sex marriage on Australian TV.

The characters tied the knot on the show in 2018, a year after gay marriage was legalised in Australia in 2017, endearing many in the LGBTQIA+ community.

‘So happy for Aaron’s story,’ commented one fan on Matt’s post.

‘Sad to see you go. Seeing such positive LGBTQ representation in Neighbours has been one of the main reasons I’ve watched it again.’

‘Wishing you every happiness and success for the future,’ another user added.

Someone else thanked Matt for his portrayal of Aaron, saying: ‘Will miss Aaron. For the most part… a very grounded and stable character.

‘Loved his integrity and loyalty to family and friends. Always there when there was fun to be had, and can tell you/he has a great connection with younger cast members.’

A third follower said: ‘All these [Neighbours] goodbyes are getting too much! I have loved watching Aaron over the years. Good luck with whatever comes next xx.’

Matt, meanwhile, acknowledged the unexpected impact his role as Aaron had on TV audiences.

‘I didn’t enter the role thinking that this was going to be such an important character for so many people,’ he told TV Tonight in a new interview.

‘I didn’t understand the responsibility and the role that was being played, until it did start to go to air… and the flood of messages that came in from people who watch the show and how it touched their lives.’

Matt’s exit from Neighbours comes as the long-running soap opera was abruptly axed in February, after Amazon did not renew their contract with production company Fremantle Australia.

In response to the shock announcement, an Amazon spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Neighbours has brought so much joy over the last 40 years to its fanbase globally.

‘Forty years is an incredible milestone and we are proud that Amazon MGM Studios was able to have a small part of bringing further episodes to Freevee and Prime Video customers over the last two years.’

The final episodes will air at the end of 2025, with fans forced to say goodbye to Ramsay Street for a second time after it was first axed in February 2022.
