Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian has revealed he underwent spinal surgery to treat debilitating nerve pain, his second major operation this year.

Fans and friends have rallied around Guy Sebastian after he revealed he underwent emergency spinal surgery on Friday.

The Aussie singer shared a selfie from his hospital bed seemingly following his surgery, which he needed to correct some nerve damage in his spine.

“They say it comes in threes. There’s been a lot of highs this year but it’s also been a year where I’ve had to manage a LOT of physical pain,” the 43-year-old began in his lengthy post on Instagram. “The worst of it has been this nerve pain in my spine shooting down my right side. I wouldn’t wish this pain on anyone. It just never stops and it’s all consuming, while trying to work, travel, do gigs etc.”

“I am however so grateful for the fact that I have been able to have spinal surgery yesterday. I hope it gives me relief and the strength comes back in my arm.”

In the photo, the former The Voice coach could be seen wearing a hospital gown as he mustered his energy to give a thumbs-up sign for the camera.

“My goal is to get all of this sorted and bounce back hard for tour early next year,” he added. “I’ll get there and I will get it done but wow, in a fair bit of pain right now.”

Sebastian’s fans sent their well wishes on Instagram, as did several of his famous friends.

“Sending love,” fellow Australian Idol alum Ricki-Lee Coulter commented, as Today entertainment editor Richard Wilkins wrote, “All strength to you Champ ! Much love to all.”

“Sending you the biggest hugs honey. here’s to the come back babe,” added fitness guru Michelle Bridges, as media personality Tottie Goldsmith added, “Pain is very tough to live with. I get it – and I hope this surgery gives you all the relief you deserve. You’re a warrior!!”

Indeed, Sebastian has powered through a string of ailments this year – in May he even underwent surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon.

At the time, he was playing a local footy game with AFL legend Brendan Fevola with the pair teaming up to make a one-off appearance for VAFA Division 5 Thirds team the Masala Dandenong Football Club.

However, after an impressive first two quarters and energetic halftime performance, Sebastian’s day ended on a sour note when he limped from the field in the fourth quarter.

He wasn’t actually supposed to play the second half, but he stayed out on the field, only to get injured and leave the ground on crutches.

Sebastian took to social media post-game, writing: “Thought I’d strap on the boots after a LONG hiatus and performed for the locals. Great day out for Masala Dandenong getting their first win with @brendanfevola25 kicking a bag! Unfortunately I’ve done a proper number on myself. #realitycheck #sticktosinging #footyglorydaysareover.”

He was taken to hospital for surgery and faced a six-month recovery period.
