The Montreal Canadiens have never been shy about making bold moves, but recent developments suggest the front office is preparing for something truly extraordinary.
Whispers around the league have linked the Habs to not just one, but two legendary centers—both future Hall of Famers with the power to instantly elevate Montreal’s playoff hopes.
While fans have long dreamed of seeing Sidney Crosby in a Canadiens jersey, a new twist has emerged that could change everything: Kent Hughes and his team have reportedly set their sights on another Penguins superstar, Evgeni Malkin.
Behind closed doors, Montreal’s management has been quietly laying the groundwork for a potential blockbuster, with inquiries dating back to last season.
The timing couldn’t be more intriguing, as Malkin enters the final year of his contract and remains one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers.
Could this be the short-term solution the Canadiens need while waiting for Crosby? Or is there a deeper strategy at play, one that could reshape the team’s future and even influence Crosby’s own decision?
The answers are shrouded in secrecy, but one thing is clear: Montreal’s pursuit of greatness is far from over, and the next chapter promises to be unforgettable.

In recent days, we’ve learned that the Montreal Canadiens are among the three teams that have shown interest in Evgeni Malkin.
Along with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers, the Habs reportedly inquired about the big Russian center.
The talk has been all about Sidney Crosby, but @MurphysLaw74 reports that there has been trade interest in Evgeni Malkin too.
Montreal, Tampa Bay and Florida have been reported to have shown interest in the recent past.

According to James Murphy, the Canadiens’ interest in the 6-foot-3 center didn’t just start yesterday.
His information suggests that Kent Hughes had already asked the Penguins about his availability back in 2024.
It’s interesting to see that Montreal’s front office has long been exploring ways to strengthen the center position.
Asking about high-profile players is also proof that the team has reached a new stage in its progression.
A short-term option while waiting for Sidney Crosby?
If the Canadiens can’t get their hands on the Penguins’ captain, who doesn’t seem eager to leave the organization that drafted him in 2005, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton appear to have considered a short-term option for the team’s second-line center role.
In the last year of his contract, Malkin would indeed be a solid temporary option-especially heading into Ivan Demidov’s first full NHL season.
Beyond the Russian connection-which admittedly would be a bonus, Number 71 of the Penguins can still play some very good hockey.
Last season, he recorded 50 points, including 16 goals, in 68 games.
If he stays healthy for much of the campaign, he could definitely help the team in the short term.
In my opinion, nothing prevents Kent Hughes from trading for Malkin while still keeping the door open for Sidney Crosby to eventually join the Habs in the coming months.
Especially since the price would likely be much lower given Malkin’s contract situation, production, and fragile health.
Adding Malkin could even influence Crosby’s decision to join Montreal before the end of the current season.

We all know Malkin pushed hard for his friend to stay in Pittsburgh during his last contract negotiations.
Reuniting with his longtime teammate in Montreal could play a major role in his decision-especially if the Habs are competitive by mid-season.
Just imagine a center lineup, after the trade deadline, featuring Nick Suzuki, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jake Evans.
At that point, the Canadiens would truly be “in business” for the playoffs.
