When the Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues finalized their blockbuster trade on July 1st, few could have predicted just how quickly the story would evolve.

General manager Kent Hughes, despite his excitement over acquiring Zachary Bolduc, openly acknowledged the risk of parting ways with a young, rising NHL defenseman in Logan Mailloux—a move that raised eyebrows across the hockey world. But now, mere weeks later, the risk appears to be paying off in ways no one anticipated.

St. Louis Blues head coach Jim Montgomery has made a bold statement that is sending shockwaves through the league, confirming Mailloux’s immediate impact and value to the team.

Suddenly, the narrative has shifted, and all eyes are on Mailloux as he steps into a crucial role in St. Louis’ defensive lineup. What exactly did Montgomery say that has fans and analysts buzzing?

How does this decision reflect on Hughes’ controversial gamble, and what does it mean for both franchises moving forward?

With the season on the horizon and expectations mounting, the true story behind this trade is only beginning to unfold. The details are compelling, and the implications could shape the future of both teams.

This past July 1st, the Montreal Canadiens completed a trade with the St. Louis Blues involving Zachary Bolduc and Logan Mailloux.

At the time of the trade, even though he was proud to acquire Bolduc, general manager Kent Hughes still admitted that he had just traded away a young NHL top-6 defenseman.. which certainly carries some risk!

Well, just a few weeks later, we can say Hughes was right.

After what GM Doug Armstrong had already mentioned..

Now Jim Montgomery has added to it.

The Blues are already making their first big decision with Logan Mailloux, confirming him as a top-6 NHL defenseman

Wow.

As reported by Marco Normandin (HABSolumentFan), in an interview on 98.5 Sports, the excellent and very transparent head coach of the St. Louis Blues declared the following:

“For us, Logan Mailloux is already in our top-6 on defense.

We didn’t trade Zachary Bolduc for a guy who might one day be in our top-6.

For us, he’s a very talented defenseman and I think the trade is good for both teams.

We had very good wingers, and Montreal had very good young defensemen.”

– Jim Montgomery

The decision has therefore been made, and he is outright confirming that Logan Mailloux already has a secured spot on defense in St. Louis.

We strongly recommend listening to his full interview on 98.5 Sports.

It’s shaping up to be a promising season!
