Lane Hutson’s name is once again echoing through the halls of Montreal, stirring up more intrigue and speculation than ever before.
The young defenseman, fresh off a Calder Trophy-winning season and widely hailed as one of the brightest stars in the NHL, now finds himself at the center of a contract saga that has fans and insiders on edge.
While Hutson’s electrifying play last season captured the hearts of Canadiens supporters and drew the attention of hockey pundits everywhere, his future with the team is suddenly shrouded in uncertainty.
A surprising revelation from a respected former scout has added fuel to the fire, hinting at unexpected twists behind closed doors, and raising eyebrows across the league.
Why has only one offer been made to a player of Hutson’s caliber? What’s really happening in the negotiation room—and what does it mean for the Canadiens’ long-term plans?
With rumors swirling and the stakes higher than ever, this situation is rapidly evolving into one of the most talked-about stories in hockey. As the drama unfolds, fans are left wondering: Will Lane Hutson remain a cornerstone in Montreal, or is a shocking turn of events looming on the horizon?

The Lane Hutson situation continues to spark a lot of talk in Montreal, as the young Canadiens defenseman is still seeking a contract extension.
On that subject, in the last few hours, former scout Grant McCagg revealed an important piece of information.
Only one offer was made for Lane Hutson, from Kent Hughes, according to former Montreal Canadiens scout Grant McCagg
We haven’t talked much about this matter in recent weeks, because it doesn’t worry me at all (personally), but I admit that this latest development is surprising.
As part of his latest podcast, Grant McCagg spoke about Lane Hutson.
Here’s part of what he had to say..
“Basically, the former scout mentioned that the Hutson camp received only one offer over the summer.
It did not meet the player’s expectations, so he said no.
Because these negotiations aren’t moving very quickly, McCagg expects it to happen next summer.”

We recently saw Insider Frank Seravalli share his thoughts on the subject, making an interesting claim.

It’s unfortunate to see that this matter will probably drag on all season (and into next summer), but I trust that eventually Kent Hughes will do the right thing for the Montreal Canadiens in the long term.
Lane Hutson, 21 years old, is a 5-foot-9, 162-pound left-handed defenseman who collected 66 points in 82 games last season.
The player who won the 2025 Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL rookie of the year, was a 62nd overall pick by the Tricolore in 2022.
