The Montreal Canadiens’ front office is once again at the center of attention, as general manager Kent Hughes finds himself facing tough questions and swirling rumors about the future of Carey Price’s contract.

With the NHL’s executives gathering in Detroit, Hughes has been unusually candid in recent interviews, dropping hints that have left fans and insiders buzzing.

In conversations with respected journalists like Eric Engels and Pierre LeBrun, Hughes revealed just enough to spark curiosity—without giving away his full strategy.

The Carey Price saga, already one of the most talked-about stories in Montreal, has now taken another twist, with Hughes outlining specific assets he absolutely will not sacrifice, no matter how desperate the situation might seem.

But what exactly is Hughes protecting? And what does this mean for the Canadiens’ plans as the new season approaches?

The details are tantalizingly close, yet still out of reach, leaving everyone wondering how this high-stakes negotiation will play out. One thing is certain: Kent Hughes is determined to do things on his own terms, and the next move could shape the team’s future for years to come. The answers are coming—but not just yet.

The general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, was recently interviewed on the sidelines of the executives’ meeting in Detroit.

He first answered questions from the excellent Eric Engels and shared some surprising information regarding the Carey Price saga.

And in the past few hours, he also spoke with Pierre LeBrun.

Kent Hughes reveals to Pierre LeBrun two trades he would immediately refuse

We all wonder what the Canadiens would give up in a trade involving Carey Price, and we obviously still don’t know the full answer, but now we do know two things:

1 – Kent Hughes will refuse to give up a first-round pick in a trade to move Carey Price’s contract.

2 – Kent Hughes will refuse to give up a second-round pick in a trade to move Carey Price’s contract.

That is excellent news!

“Kent Hughes told Pierre LeBrun that the Canadiens are not desperate enough to offer a first-round pick, or even a second-round pick, to trade Carey Price’s contract!”

This will really be a fascinating case to follow.

Kent Hughes has always shown he takes his time, making a deal only when necessary, and on his terms. I absolutely expect the same in this case, even if there is a certain deadline (with the season quickly approaching).
