The Stanley Cup Final is always a stage for unforgettable moments, both on and off the ice. This year, as the Edmonton Oilers seized a dramatic overtime victory against the Florida Panthers in Game 1, the spotlight quickly shifted from the action to the commentary booth. Former NHL star and current analyst PK Subban found himself at the center of a heated debate after making an audacious statement live on air—a remark that has since set social media ablaze and divided fans and experts alike.

With emotions running high and the stakes higher than ever, Subban’s bold commentary about the legacies of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl has become the talk of the hockey world. His suggestion to immediately retire their jersey numbers if they bring the Cup back to Edmonton has sparked intense reactions, raising questions about tradition, greatness, and what it truly means to cement a legacy in the sport. As the series unfolds, all eyes are not just on the players, but also on the conversations shaping the narrative of this year’s Stanley Cup Final.

After the Oilers beat the Panthers in Game 1 of the SCF, former defenseman and current commentator PK Subban is facing backlash for an outlandish statement.

The Edmonton Oilers beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 in OT in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, taking a 1-0 series lead. It marks a reverse of what happened in last year’s Cup Final against the Panthers, who initially took a 3-0 series lead.

Leon Draisaitl played the role of hero with a pair of goals, including the OT GWG. Connor McDavid also had a pair of assists.

Former NHL defenseman PK Subban, now an analyst, is drawing criticism for an outlandish statement he recently made during a live segment with noted sports host Stephen A. Smith.

Subban said that he believes that the Oilers should retire the sweater numbers of both McDavid and Draisaitl immediately if they beat the Panthers in the Cup Final to capture their 1st championship since 1990.

The significance of it. If Connor McDavid wins a Stanley Cup, if Leon Draisaitl wins a Stanley Cup…I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I’d be an advocate for putting their jerseys in the rafters right away. These guys have been that good, immediate Hall of Famers. These guys are going into the Hall of Fame, and if they get it done, you may be able to add Stuart Skinner’s name to that group.

It is a big statement, because that’s how great these guys have been. Without having that ring on their finger, there’s not one player in this League that will say those guys don’t deserve to have it.
