As you know, Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard has announced his retirement from the National Hockey League.

His career as a professional player has officially come to an end.

Since the Canadiens were eliminated by the Washington Capitals, he’s been giving various interviews to different media outlets, reflecting on what turned out to be his final season.

It’s always very interesting.

Savard clearly prefers praising the Habs’ young players over talking about himself. He talks about others far more often than about his own career.. That’s just who David Savard is, he always puts his teammates ahead of himself.

But recently, he made an interesting statement about the end of his career.

Kent Hughes agreed to a major request involving David Savard: he allowed him to finish his career with the Canadiens and didn’t trade him

This is a major gesture from the general manager, and Savard himself has just confirmed it.

Speaking on the La Poche Bleue podcast, Savard made sure to highlight this classy move by Kent Hughes.

Not every GM would have accepted such a request.

“Savard asked Kent Hughes to stay in Montreal, and the GM agreed.”

Hughes chose not to trade him, even though he could’ve likely received some decent assets in return.

We love that!

In the interview, Savard also revealed that he first started thinking about retirement last summer, when he simply wasn’t able to train at the level he wanted.

Old injuries kept catching up with him to the point where he had to take weeks off from training – something that deeply frustrated him.

He was never able to get his body to the level he wanted heading into the 2024-25 season.

Savard ultimately made the decision around Christmas, and the rest is history.
