Montreal is buzzing with excitement as the city welcomes one of hockey’s brightest young stars, Ivan Demidov.

The 19-year-old forward, drafted fifth overall by the Canadiens in 2024, has already made waves both on and off the ice.

Fans have been eager to watch his journey as he settles into life in Quebec, especially after an impressive season that hinted at a promising NHL future. But as the Bell Centre lights shine on Demidov, there’s an undercurrent of concern that few saw coming—a personal struggle that goes far beyond goals and assists.

Demidov’s decision to spend the entire summer in Montreal was initially celebrated as a sign of his commitment to the team and his desire to embrace a new culture.

Yet, behind the scenes, there’s a far more complicated—and heartbreaking—reason for his extended stay.

Whispers have begun to circulate, and recent reports from respected sources have cast a shadow over what should have been a joyous new chapter for the young Russian phenom.

What could possibly keep a rising star like Ivan Demidov from returning home, even for a short visit? Why has his story suddenly taken such a somber turn? The answers may surprise you—and reveal a side of professional sports rarely seen by the public.

The excellent Tony Marinaro has just reported some sad news regarding the young Montreal Canadiens forward, Ivan Demidov.

We already knew that Demidov decided to spend the entire summer in Montreal and not return home, mainly to discover the city and fully prepare for the Canadiens’ upcoming season, but there was also another reason.

A very sad reason..

Ivan Demidov can’t really return home

If he goes back home, Demidov would immediately have to complete his mandatory military service.

“Tony Marinaro on 98.5 FM:

Ivan Demidov would be subject to mandatory military service shall he return to Russia”

It must be so difficult for him.. It’s so sad to know that he can’t even go back to see his family!

He’s only 19 years old, we can’t forget that.

According to Tony Marinaro on 98.5 FM, Ivan Demidov would be subjected to mandatory military service if he returned to Russia.”

Should we conclude that young Demidov will never return home again?

Will he eventually give in, go back home to see his family, and complete his military service?

This is undoubtedly a situation to keep an eye on for young Demidov.

Ivan Demidov, 19 years old, is a 6-foot-1, 192-pound forward drafted 5th overall in 2024 by the Montreal Canadiens.

He recorded 49 points in 65 games last season in the KHL as well as 2 points in 2 NHL games (plus 2 points in 5 playoff games).

He is preparing to begin his first full season in the NHL.
