The Montreal Canadiens have been surrounded by swirling rumors and intense speculation all season, but nothing has captured the attention of fans and insiders quite like the ongoing saga involving superstar goalie Carey Price.
Now, in a rare and highly anticipated interview, general manager Kent Hughes has finally broken his silence—offering a glimpse into the team’s strategy and the future of one of hockey’s most iconic figures.
Published by renowned journalist Eric Engels, this exclusive interview promises insights that could reshape the Canadiens’ roster and set the stage for dramatic changes.
For the first time this season, Hughes addresses the elephant in the room: Is Carey Price really on the verge of being traded? What factors are influencing this high-stakes decision, and how close are we to seeing a blockbuster announcement?
Hughes’s response is both measured and revealing, hinting at behind-the-scenes negotiations and the delicate balance between team needs and league realities.
Yet, not everything is as clear-cut as it seems. With multiple proposals reportedly in play and the hockey world watching every move, the next few weeks could bring unexpected twists.
Readers will want to dive deeper to uncover the full story and understand what’s truly at stake for Montreal and Carey Price.

The journalist Eric Engels, from Sportsnet, has probably just published the most important interview in a while.
It’s the first interview this season with none other than the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes.
Many topics were discussed in the interview, including of course the much-talked-about upcoming trade involving Carey Price, a trade that could literally be announced at any moment.
Well then.. What does Kent Hughes think about it?
Is he really going to trade Carey Price?
We have his answer on the matter.
Kent Hughes confirms he is absolutely open to trading Carey Price’s contract, but only on one condition
The trade must make sense for the Montreal Canadiens, and also for the other club involved with Hughes.
In short, Hughes is not going to force the issue and he does not feel obligated to trade Carey Price, but he will do it under the right conditions.
“We’re fine, we don’t have to trade Carey Price,” he added. “If we can find a trade to move his contract that makes sense for us and makes sense for another team, we’ll pursue it. But we don’t have to.”

We strongly recommend Eric Engels’ full article on this topic with Kent Hughes.
There may be more compelling storylines about the Canadiens heading into 2025-26, but there was no choice but to broach the topic of cap compliance with Kent Hughes.

As of now, Price’s contract still hasn’t been traded, and several concrete proposals are circulating.
The next few weeks will be very interesting!
