The Montreal Canadiens have found themselves at the center of intense speculation as the search for a reliable second-line center continues to dominate headlines across Quebec. With every sports media outlet and countless fans fixated on the team’s next move, the pressure is mounting for general manager Kent Hughes to deliver a solution that will solidify the Canadiens’ lineup for the seasons ahead.

Recent revelations from respected journalist Alexandre Gascon of Radio-Canada have added a new layer to the ongoing discussion, hinting at previously undisclosed concerns within the organization regarding potential trade targets.

Among the names swirling in rumors, veteran center Ryan O’Reilly has emerged as a focal point, with reports indicating the Canadiens held serious negotiations to acquire him before the trade deadline. However, as details begin to surface about why a deal ultimately fell through, it’s clear that the decision-making process in Montreal is more complex than it may appear on the surface. With the team’s management weighing every possible factor in their pursuit of the ideal fit, the story of the Canadiens’ center search is far from over—and the stakes couldn’t be higher as the franchise looks to build a contender.

It’s hard to focus on anything other than Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens’ search for a second-line center right now.

Literally every sports media outlet in Quebec is almost exclusively talking about it.

And on that note, the excellent Alexandre Gascon of Radio-Canada has just revealed some interesting new information.

A Concern from Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens Regarding Ryan O’Reilly

For those who remember, there was a trade rumor that had center Ryan O’Reilly being dealt to the Montreal Canadiens around the most recent trade deadline.

There were reportedly negotiations to that effect, as well as with the New Jersey Devils, but nothing materialized.

That said, Alexandre Gascon may have just revealed why the Canadiens had concerns about acquiring the veteran O’Reilly.

“The Canadiens are also concerned about his lack of speed.

Aside from those issues, the fit between the two sides seems natural.”

If Ryan O’Reilly were faster, would he already be a member of the Montreal Canadiens?

It definitely gives us a better idea of what Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton are targeting!

“And in a piece by Alexandre Gascon (Radio-Canada Sports), what we gather is that the Canadiens have discussed the Preds forward internally.. because they already have a concern about him.”

O’Reilly, age 34, recorded 53 points in 79 games this season, along with 69 points in 82 games last season (47 total goals over the past two seasons).

He earns $4.5 million per year through 2027 and is an excellent defensive center.

Definitely a situation to keep an eye on!
