The Montreal Canadiens have been at the center of swirling trade rumors in recent weeks, with one young name repeatedly surfacing in the speculation: Owen Beck.
While fans have debated his future and what his potential departure could mean for the team, new details have emerged that shed light on just how close Beck came to being traded—and the surprising reasons why the deal ultimately fell through.
Behind closed doors, General Manager Kent Hughes has reportedly been open to including Beck in certain trade scenarios, but only for the right return.
Now, an insider has confirmed that Beck was indeed offered in a high-profile negotiation involving another promising NHL talent.
Yet, despite the intrigue and anticipation, the Canadiens’ plans took an unexpected turn, leaving supporters and analysts alike with more questions than answers.

For several weeks, there have been rumors that young forward Owen Beck might possibly be available for a trade by the Canadiens.
Obviously, Kent Hughes isn’t absolutely determined to trade him, but he would be willing to include him in the right deal (according to these rumors).
Well, this has now apparently been confirmed by the excellent Marco D’Amico.
Kent Hughes Offered Owen Beck in the Trade for Noah Dobson
Recently asked about Beck by a fan, the excellent Marco D’Amico revealed this:
“They still like him, but he was one of the players offered in the Dobson discussions.
It could go either way depending on his play.”
Are the Habs still high on Beck and do you see him potentially making the team out of camp? Could he be part of a trade for a 2C?

So don’t be surprised if Beck is eventually involved in a trade, possibly to acquire an already established second-line NHL center.
Beck was therefore proposed to Mathieu Darche and the Islanders, but they ultimately preferred Emil Heineman.
Heineman, now 23 years old, is a 6’2″, 198-pound winger who was a second-round pick by the Florida Panthers in 2020 (43rd overall).
Last season with the Montreal Canadiens, he recorded 18 points in 62 games, including ten goals.
Do you think the Islanders made the right choice by picking Heineman over Beck?
Both had similar production in their first AHL season (with the Laval Rocket), but so far, the transition to the NHL seems to be easier for Heineman.
