Neighbours appears to be quite literally going out with a bang ahead of its second cancellation later this year. While the long-running soap has previously featured countless affair storylines, family scandals, and dramatic romances, viewers were recently introduced to its first-ever gay love triangle.

After struggling to move on since the death of his husband last year, Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) has re-entered the dating pool and quickly reconnected with two of his former flames: Rhett Norman (Liam Maguire) and Colton Keys (Jakob Ambrose). This week, the trio coincidentally attended the same yoga class, with Rhett and Colton both trying to impress Aaron and outdo each other.

Aaron initially received differing advice on which man to pursue, but ultimately decided to date them both with no strings attached, which will no doubt result in chaos.

Actor Liam Maguire tells Yahoo Lifestyle that although he felt “intimidated” to compete with Jakob Ambrose, he was thrilled when he learned about the storyline because “it sounded like heaps of fun”.

“Reading the scripts I kept finding myself laughing and that felt like the most progressive thing about the storyline, that it’s so confidently queer while being able to be funny and playful because all the characters are entirely comfortable with who they are,” he shares.

Jakob Ambrose adds that he was “very excited” to be involved with the storyline, and filming with Matt and Liam was “some of the most enjoyable and silly times” he’s had on set.

“It definitely was something I recognised reading these scripts that we were going to be given the chance to portray queer characters in a really fun, messy, playful, honest way. It’s not so irreverent and polite,” he tells us. “I think it’s important that all our colours are seen on screen – the happy family, but also the messiness it sometimes takes to get there. Working with Liam and competing in a way has been the best way to be forced to step it up.”

Fans praise progressive storyline

Many viewers have taken to social media this week to praise the modern and “absolutely hilarious” storyline, with one person describing it as “the best thing on Neighbours for a long time”.

“Best scene in Neighbours I’ve ever watched, absolutely hilarious, hats off to the writers,” another added, followed by a third said, “This was a really funny scene!”.

Who will Aaron choose?

The show has encouraged fans to choose whether they’re ‘Team Rhett’ or ‘Team Colton’; however, plenty of people have predicted they will become a ‘throuple’.

“Team Aaron gets two boyfriends!” a fan commented, while another agreed, “I’d happily see all three of them hook up and make a throuple”.

“He doesn’t have to choose. Let’s have a throuple living on the street!” someone else shared, with a different user writing, “Isn’t it about time Ramsay Street had another throuple? The obvious answer”.

Neighbours featured its first polyamorous relationship in 2021 with Amy Greenwood (Jacinta Stapleton), Ned Willis (Ben Hall), and Levi Canning (Richie Morris). The throuple eventually broke up, and Amy and Ned continued dating each other until they called it quits and he left Erinsborough to start anew in Sydney.

Neighbours axed for the second time

It was revealed in February that Neighbours had once again been cancelled, less than two years after returning to screens with a new broadcast partner.

According to The Sun, the show’s production company, Fremantle, “failed to agree to a new deal” with Amazon to continue the series. Neighbours will reportedly stop filming in the coming months and will air its final episode at the end of the year.
