MasterChef fans have made a major prediction after seeing a fan favourite contestant make a dish that the judges could only describe as “mind-boggling”. During Sunday night’s episode, the remaining contestants (aside from Laura, who had immunity) were given a challenge by Aussie chef Maggie Beer, who offered them the choice between more time or more ingredients.

The judges had several tables of ingredients that would only be uncovered after a certain amount of time. They revealed the ingredients one by one as the clock counted down, with those who were keen on baking a dish having the most time with the ingredients on offer. Meanwhile, those who wanted elements like meat and fish were forced to wait longer.

Despite the risk, some contestants were happy to sacrifice a little time for the ingredients they wanted and play to their strengths.

Depinder wanted to make some kind of curry to wow the judges, and waited in the hopes that spices and herbs might be uncovered, while almost everyone was already cooking. After waiting until there was only 45 minutes left, Depinder told the cameras, “These ingredients are leaning towards Maggie’s palette, so I could be waiting for ingredients that don’t exist here.”

After realising her spices probably won’t appear, she hit the ground running to make a curry and flaky paratha using herbs and spices that she wouldn’t usually use.

“I’ve never made anything like this before, so I just don’t know if my dish has that depth of flavour and it’s extremely risky. I don’t know if making this curry was the best decision.”

Depinder plated up a smoked chicken cafreal, with a flaky paratha and tangy onion, herb chutney.

“Well, a curry and bread in 45 minutes is extremely brave,” Sofia Levin told her after she introduced the dish to the judging panel.

“So, the big question is: is the curry going to have enough flavour in it,” Poh Ling Yeow said.

And it turns out, it really did.

Jean-Christophe Novelli showed his enthusiasm through his facial expressions, while Andy Allen said, “That is mind-boggling.”

“I know she had a lot of ingredients, to play with, but not specific spices that she would normally go for, and boy oh boy, she packed that full of flavour,” he added.

“That is one of the best roti-style breads I have had in years,” Poh added.

“Developing those layers [of flavour] in a curry in 45 minutes, I couldn’t do it in twice the time,” Maggie said. “It’s just so good.”

Jean-Christophe went so far as to wrap up his portion in a “doggy bag” to take home to his wife.

Andy later told Depinder that her curry was “stuffed with silly amounts of flavour”.

Viewers were also left stunned by what Depinder was able to plate up in such a short amount of time, with former MasterChef star Dan Dumbrell describing her as “unstoppable”.

“She deserves to be the winner this time… fingers crossed,” one fan wrote.

“Am happy @depinder_ is in top 10… look forward to see her in top five,” another said.

“Give her the trophy already,” a third wrote.

“Indian spices stand out in the world’s bland flavours,” someone else wrote. “I think Depinder should cook all Indian dishes, she will be the winner.”

“The flavour queen,” another person said.

“Depinder, we would love you to win this season…and IF you miss out on the top 10 we are going to cry,” one person added.

“Depinder played to her strengths and it had paid off! YAY!” another happy viewer shared.
