Poh Ling Yeow was understandably terrified when she found out this year’s season of MasterChef would once again feature a ‘Back To Win’ concept. Not only was she just coming off the back of her first time being a judge on the reality show, but she would now be critiquing the food of her former co-stars.

Poh previously competed alongside Andre Ursini in season one and Callum Hann and Laura Sharrad in season 12. In fact, Callum and Laura both outlasted her in the competition, finishing in fourth and second place, respectively, while Poh came in sixth.

While these connections have barely received a mention on this year’s season, which also sees Andy Allen judging the food of his season four co-stars Audra Morrice and Beau Cook, Poh tells Yahoo Lifestyle it’s something that definitely weighed on her mind.

“I was really freaking out at the beginning of the year, because I felt like I just started to get the hang of the job end of last year,” she shares. “You really just feel thrown into the deep end, because there’s only so much you can kind of anticipate, but doing it is an entirely different thing.

“And I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to come into this year with more confidence’. And then they announced that it was Back To Win, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is a whole other new thing again’.”

Poh admits she felt “so hesitant” returning this season because of the theme, but the former contestants were all “so generous” towards her, which made the dynamic much less complicated.

“I felt really comfortable speaking my mind, and I gave them really honest feedback. They all did brilliantly, and I think this year, the contestants kind of know when they fudge something up or when they’ve done really well, so I think that actually makes the job easier,” she details.

“I feel so thankful that they were so gracious towards me as well, so that made me ease into it, and it was such a fantastic season. Because having contestants that know the ropes and know how to even just like, pause and speak to the producers, they know to just get that over and done with so they can keep cooking, it was just really cool to watch, and the standard has been amazing.”

It was announced earlier this week that Poh is one of this year’s seven nominees for the coveted Gold Logie, a public-voted award for the most popular personality on Australian television.

She’s joined by Ally Langdon, Julia Morris, Lisa Millar, Lynne McGranger, and former winners Sonia Kruger and Hamish Blake. This marks the first time in the award show’s history that there are six women among the group of nominees and only one man.

“It feels really amazing to be part of this historical moment,” Poh told Yahoo Lifestyle at the nominations event on Monday. “And I think also, quite a few of the ladies are middle-aged, which I think is amazing, because I think this is our moment to shine.”

Poh’s co-star, Sofia Levin, also received a nomination for the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent, while MasterChef Australia is up for Best Competition Reality Program.
