Florida Panthers superstar Matthew Tkachuk was ejected today after a late hit on Jake Guentzel dramatically increased tensions between the two teams.
The Battle of Florida is alive and well in the NHL this year as the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers face off for a highly-anticipated first-round matchup.
It is a shame that only one of these teams can advance to the second round, but this is exactly how rivalries are forged.
There has always been a rivalry between the two teams, but this year things have escalated quickly.
During game two, Lightning forward Brandon Hagel was given a major penalty for interference on Panthers captain Alexander Barkov.
That play ultimately resulted in Hagel getting a one-game suspension, thus he missed game three today.
Luckily, the same can not be said for Barkov, who was shaken up by the hit, but was able to suit up for the Panthers in game three.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, his presence in the lineup would prove to be too little as the Lightning earned their first victory of the series, avoiding going down 3-0.
Making matters worse for the team is the fact that Matthew Tkachuk was given a major penalty and was ejected in the final minutes of the game as Tampa Bay secured the contest with an empty net goal.
Now the superstar forward could potentially be facing a suspension of his own.
After the game, Lightning head coach Jon Cooper quoted Panthers head coach Paul Maurice saying, “The only players we hit are the ones with puck,” which is exactly what Maurice said after Hagel’s hit on Barkov.
This will certainly lead to more drama and tension between the two teams as we head to game four, so that one will be must-watch hockey.
