Just over a year ago, Mike Matheson was arguably the most maligned player on the Montreal Canadiens roster. He was a lightning rod for criticism, a defenseman whose costly turnovers and questionable defensive plays made him a nightly topic of frustration among fans and analysts alike. The calls for a trade were deafening, and many, including myself, wondered if he would ever fit into the team’s long-term plans. Today, that narrative has not just changed—it has been completely obliterated.

In one of the most stunning turnarounds in recent memory, Matheson has silenced his critics and transformed his game. He is no longer a liability; he is a cornerstone. Playing the best hockey of his career, he has become an essential leader on the blue line, logging heavy minutes and contributing at both ends of the ice. This isn’t just a hot streak; it’s a fundamental reinvention, and it all started when one key change was made to the defensive pairings. The arrival of his new partner has unlocked a level of play few thought possible, creating a defensive duo that is now the backbone of the team’s success. So, what exactly sparked this incredible resurgence?

Barely a year ago, Mike Matheson was without a doubt one of the most criticized players on the Montreal Canadiens.

His turnovers were often the talk of the town, his defensive play was frequently questioned, and many fans were even calling for a trade.

I have to admit, I was among his critics at times.

But today, the roles are completely reversed.

The Quebec-born defenseman is playing the best hockey of his career and now forms a perfect pairing with Noah Dobson.

Mike Matheson and Noah Dobson Become a Defensive Pillar for the Montreal Canadiens

Last night, analyst David Calabrese wrote on X:

“An apology is owed to Mike Matheson from a lot of Habs fans.”

And it’s hard not to agree with him.

Since the start of the season, Matheson has recorded three goals and three assists in ten games while averaging over 23 minutes of ice time per game.

That’s an incredible performance!

His stats perfectly reflect his impact.

His play has completely transformed since the arrival of Dobson, his new partner on the blue line.

I find that the two complement each other perfectly.

Matheson drives the transition, while Dobson provides coverage and makes that quick first pass.

It’s an intelligent, mobile, and disciplined duo.

In my opinion, Montreal hasn’t seen such a balanced defensive pairing in a very long time.

I honestly think he’s becoming one of the Canadiens’ silent leaders in the locker room. The younger players seem to truly appreciate him.

And this resurgence is no coincidence.

I’m certain it’s the result of patience, experience, and the obvious chemistry he’s built with Dobson.
