The atmosphere inside Montreal’s Bell Centre was electric as fans prepared for a highly anticipated rookie showdown against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The spotlight was set to shine brightest on Ivan Demidov, the Canadiens’ dazzling young forward whose recent performances have ignited hope and excitement throughout the city.

But just moments before puck drop, a stunning, last-minute announcement from the Habs sent shockwaves through the crowd and across social media.

Rumors began swirling, and confusion rippled through the stands. Why would the Canadiens make such an unexpected decision involving their rising star, especially after his brilliant showing the night before?

For many, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Some fans had come to the arena specifically to witness Demidov in action, only to have their expectations dashed at the eleventh hour.

Questions piled up. Was there an injury? A disciplinary issue? Or something else entirely? As disappointment and frustration simmered among the spectators, the organization’s reasoning remained shrouded in mystery.

The details behind this controversial move—and its impact on both the team and the loyal fanbase—are more complex than they appear. What really happened, and what does it mean for the Canadiens going forward? The full story is just beginning to unfold.

We have a last-minute announcement from the Montreal Canadiens involving young forward Ivan Demidov.

The Habs have just confirmed that Demidov will NOT be in uniform today..

After a brilliant performance last night against the Winnipeg Jets’ prospects, Demidov is getting a well-deserved day off this Sunday.

“Demidov out for this afternoon’s game.

Beck now on the top like with Xhekaj and Kapanen.

No injury to report.”

– Marco D’Amico

Personally, I like the decision to rest Demidov. No need to risk an injury for the young player.

On the other hand, it’s strange that the Canadiens announced this news at the very last minute!

That’s what many fans are criticizing right now, as you can see in the comments.

The Canadiens announce that young Ivan Demidov will not be in uniform today, 15 minutes before puck drop

Some spectators bought tickets specifically to see Demidov in action, only to learn at the last second that it unfortunately won’t happen.

The frustration and disappointment are understandable, but I’ll emphasize that I’m 100% in agreement with the Habs’ decision to rest Demidov.

I just think they could have confirmed it a bit earlier..

Anyway, here’s today’s lineup:

“Ivan Demidov will not be in the Habs’ lineup for this afternoon’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs (3 p.m., RDS) for the Rookie Showdown!”

– Stu Cowan

Here’s how it looks:

“Xhekaj – Kapanen – Beck
Tuch – Rohrer – Thorpe
Goriunov – Mesar – Dunlap
Wang – Dineen – Estapa

Engstrom – Reinbacher
