The winds of change are swirling in Montreal, and all eyes are on the crease. As the city’s beloved Canadiens gear up for another season, the spotlight has shifted to a position that has long been the heartbeat of this storied franchise: goaltending. Recent developments have sent ripples through the hockey community, with management’s latest moves hinting at a bold new chapter between the pipes.

While the Canadiens’ front office has been characteristically tight-lipped, subtle clues and insider whispers have begun to paint a clearer picture of what fans can expect when the puck drops next fall. The dynamic between Samuel Montembeault, a proven performer who captured the admiration of fans last season, and Jakub Dobes, the promising young netminder eager to make his mark, has quickly become one of the most intriguing storylines in Montreal.

This brewing competition is more than just a battle for ice time—it’s a statement about the team’s direction, philosophy, and willingness to embrace risk in pursuit of greatness. As the Canadiens look to ignite a new era and perhaps redefine their identity, the decisions made in the blue paint could very well set the tone for the entire campaign. Buckle up, Habs fans—the next chapter is about to begin.

Let’s talk about the Montreal Canadiens’ goaltenders, Samuel Montembeault and Jakub Dobes, since the topic came up during Kent Hughes’ press conference.

It somewhat flew under the radar this week, but the Canadiens’ GM practically confirmed an initial goaltending decision.

The rumor has been circulating for a few days, but Habs management has reportedly made their choice official.

Samuel Montembeault and Jakub Dobes Reportedly Set to Be the Two Goaltenders for the Canadiens to Start Next Season

It’s a big decision, but it’s the right one.

Dobes is young and relatively experienced, but he checked every box this season and didn’t deserve to be pushed aside in favor of a new acquisition.

But that’s not all.

Not only are Montembeault and Dobes reportedly locked in as the Canadiens’ two goalies for next season, but a major shift in philosophy also appears to be taking shape.

According to several sources, including Max Truman:

“If I were Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton, I’d keep Montembeault and Dobes in Montreal next year: Dobes to challenge Montembeault for the number one spot. I’d pair Fowler with a veteran capable of being a #2 in Montreal in case of injury. I’m pretty convinced that’s what they’ll do.”

The Canadiens are said to be open to a change in the goaltending hierarchy.

The goal would be to allow Jakub Dobes to challenge Samuel Montembeault for the number-one goalie role.

At least, that’s the Canadiens’ plan.

It’ll definitely be something to watch next fall, but the Canadiens seem open to reigniting a goaltending competition for the starting role-even after Montembeault’s very convincing performance this season.

Do you like the idea?
