As whispers grow louder across the NHL, the hockey world is buzzing with speculation about a potential blockbuster move involving the Anaheim Ducks’ rising star, Mason McTavish.

At just 22, McTavish is already turning heads as a rugged, dynamic center, and rumors suggest the Ducks might be open to parting ways with their prized asset—if the price is right.

For the Montreal Canadiens, this presents a tantalizing yet risky opportunity: could they land the game-changing forward they desperately need, or would the cost be too steep?

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The Ducks’ demands are clear, and for Montreal, that means considering the unthinkable—moving David Reinbacher, a player many see as the future cornerstone of their blue line.

Add in the looming reality of a massive contract for McTavish, and the Canadiens face a dilemma that could reshape their entire rebuild.

With fans and analysts fiercely debating the potential trade, the answer remains uncertain: should Montreal take the gamble and make a bold move, or hold onto their defensive jewel?

The decision ahead is fraught with risk and intrigue, and its outcome could define the next era of Habs hockey.

The rumor is growing: the Anaheim Ducks might be listening to offers for their young power forward, Mason McTavish.

At 22 years old, the former third-overall pick in 2021 represents a rugged, talented center who is still on the rise. A potentially major acquisition for any team, but at a high cost. And that’s where the discussion gets serious.

Because in the McTavish case, there are two prices to consider: the one to pay in assets to acquire him, and the one to pay in dollars.

On the Ducks’ side, the demands are clear: they would like a top young right-shot defenseman in return.

For the Detroit Red Wings, that likely means parting with an Axel Sandin-Pellikka. And for the Montreal Canadiens? It would mean seriously considering a name like David Reinbacher. And that’s where the dilemma takes shape.

The price to pay: is Reinbacher worth it?

Reinbacher, the fifth-overall pick in 2023, is seen by the Montreal organization as a long-term defensive pillar. Sacrificing him for a forward, as promising as he may be, would be a bold-if not risky-decision for Kent Hughes.

That said, McTavish would fill a glaring need at center, a strategic position that remains fragile despite the presence of Nick Suzuki.

But we must not forget the second cost: the contract. McTavish is nearing the end of his entry-level deal.

If the asking price for Mason McTavish starts with David Reinbacher, should the GoHabsGo do it?

Any team acquiring him will sooner or later have to sign him long-term, with a salary that could easily exceed $8 million per season.

With that in mind, are the Canadiens in the best position? They have the cap space, but will they want to sacrifice one of their best prospects for a player who will be expensive in both assets and money?

The answer could very well define the direction the Habs’ rebuild takes in the months ahead.
