We have an update on Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard.
As reported by the excellent Charles-Alexis Brisebois, David Savard is considering retiring at the end of the season.
Attention
His decision has not yet been made, but know that it is a possibility, and it could possibly further explain why he was not traded last Friday by Kent Hughes.
Savard could therefore finish his career with the Montreal Canadiens at the end of the current season.
David Savard could announce his retirement at the end of this season
This will be a situation to monitor in the coming weeks/months, and it would truly be a shame to lose him, but we simply wish for him to make the best decision for himself and his family.
It is true that Savard seems to have slowed down significantly over the past year, but in my humble opinion, he still absolutely has value within this team.
Particularly at the end of a game to preserve a lead, when the opposing team pulls their goalie for a sixth skater, he remains elite at blocking shots and shutting down the opposition’s offense.
At 34 years old, Savard has recorded 12 points in 57 games this season, with a plus/minus of -7, and he remains an elite shot blocker.
The Quebec-born defenseman earns $3.5 million until the end of the season and will be completely free (unrestricted free agent) next summer.
Do you think the Canadiens should sign David Savard for another season?
One thing is certain: as Savard is about to be without a valid contract, and knowing he must be carrying several nagging injuries, it raises a question mark about his future as a hockey player.
“It’s a decision that will come a little later in the year.” – David Savard, who has not yet decided whether he will return to play hockey next year.
“In other words, Savard is considering retirement. Even though he really loves hockey and the Canadiens, he knows that at a certain point, he will have to move on and end his career. He just doesn’t know if that will be in 2025.”

A true warrior, that David Savard!
