In a major development, renowned NHL insider Jeff Friedman of TSN revealed on his latest broadcast that the Montreal Canadiens are actively working on bringing defenseman Ivan Demidov to Montreal for the remainder of the season.

According to Friedman, “Sources close to the negotiations confirm the Canadiens’ serious interest in Demidov, with discussions advancing to the ‘how’ rather than the ‘if’ stage.” Friedman highlighted that Demidov’s versatility, defensive prowess, and experience would significantly bolster the Canadiens’ playoff push.

The team is navigating the logistical challenges of Demidov’s current overseas commitment, aiming for a swift resolution. Friedman cautioned, “While nothing is signed, the Canadiens’ intent is clear, and an announcement could come sooner rather than later if all parties align.” This potential move underscores General Manager Kent Hughes’s proactive approach to enhancing the roster’s competitiveness for a postseason run. Canadiens fans are on high alert, awaiting confirmation of Demidov’s impending arrival.

Canadiens prospect Ivan Demidov sets U-20 KHL scoring record

Arguably the best NHL insider, Elliotte Friedman, just made a fascinating statement about Ivan Demidov. It really makes you believe that the Montreal Canadiens’ top prospect could join the team as early as this season.

Imagine how huge that would be for the playoff race.

We were literally talking about this just a few minutes ago, reporting that Demidov joining the Canadiens has become a possibility.

But that was before Elliotte Friedman said this:

Elliotte Friedman on Ivan Demidov signing with the Habs after his SKA season ends:

“It sure seems like the Montreal Canadiens are hopeful it’s gonna work out.

Obviously, they’ve done everything they can to make it that it’s going to work out.

I know several people who’ve gone to watch him play this year and they say he’s an absolute stud.

He is as good as advertised. He understands why both the Canadiens and their fans are excited to have him.”

Friedman is clearly stating here that the Montreal Canadiens “are quite hopeful” of bringing Demidov into their lineup as early as this season.

Imagine how huge that would be in this highly competitive NHL playoff race.

The Canadiens are hopeful of signing Ivan Demidov as soon as his KHL season ends

I’m trying not to get too excited, and the goal is definitely not to give you false hope, but I genuinely believe that this could happen, especially after a statement like this from an insider as well-connected as Elliotte Friedman.

In any case, the Canadiens are trying hard!

As we mentioned in our previous article, this has happened before between an NHL team and SKA St. Petersburg, notably with Vladislav Gavrikov in 2019.
