As part of his press conference today, Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes made a very interesting statement.
While he did not announce a trade today, it is clearly not for lack of trying.
Here is a very interesting excerpt from the Canadiens GM’s press conference:
“We looked at a lot of things. I called teams about players who were under contract but not necessarily on the trade market to see if there was a way to make a trade involving certain players..
I’m not going to name names because they are very good players, very good prospects, and very good draft picks, but in most cases, these are things we can revisit next summer.
They weren’t ready to do it right now.”
– Kent Hughes, General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens
The details can be found in his full press conference from today.
Kent Hughes attempted a major trade
He didn’t want to name names, but considering the standings and the rumors we heard today, we can suggest a few possibilities.
Possible targets could include Pavel Zacha (Boston Bruins), Jordan Kyrou (St. Louis Blues), and possibly Mason McTavish and Trevor Zegras (Anaheim Ducks).
Zacha, 27, is signed at $4.75 million per year until 2027 and has 39 points in 64 games this season with Boston.
Kyrou, 26, is signed at $8.125 million per year until 2031 and has 49 points in 63 games this season with St. Louis.
McTavish, 22, is still on his entry-level contract and has 34 points in 55 games this season with Anaheim.
Zegras, 23, is signed at $5.75 million per year until 2026 and has 17 points in 36 games this season with Anaheim.
A situation to monitor next summer, then.
