Change is in the air for the New York Islanders, and all eyes are on the team’s new leadership as they chart a bold course for the future. With the recent appointment of Mathieu Darche as general manager, speculation has swirled around the fate of head coach Patrick Roy—a legendary figure whose presence behind the bench has sparked both excitement and debate among fans and analysts alike. As the organization embarks on a new chapter, questions abound: Will Roy’s proven track record and championship pedigree be the foundation for a successful rebuild, or will a new direction be taken under fresh management?

Amidst these uncertainties, the Islanders have made a pivotal decision that could define their trajectory for years to come. The announcement regarding Roy’s role signals a commitment to stability, youth development, and a renewed sense of purpose within the franchise. The new general manager of the New York Islanders, Mathieu Darche, has just made a major announcement involving Patrick Roy.

Roy will officially get a brand-new start with new management, as Darche confirmed that he will keep the former number 33 as the head coach of the Islanders.

We’re very happy for Patrick!

A new mandate for Patrick Roy with the New York Islanders

This will mark the beginning of a new era for the Islanders, and Roy will be part of it, but with a fairly different mandate as head coach.

He is more likely to be tasked with developing young players and ensuring that Mathieu Darche’s rebuild or reset goes as smoothly as possible.

Here is the confirmation:

And the official announcement from the Islanders.

“Mathieu Darche announced today that Patrick Roy will remain the head coach of the New York Islanders.”

In my humble opinion, this is absolutely the right decision!

This season, despite numerous major injuries, particularly to players like Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson, the Islanders remained in the NHL playoff race until the very end.

They ultimately finished the 2024-2025 season with a record of 35 wins, 35 losses, and 12 overtime losses, totaling 82 points in 82 games.

Quietly, the Islanders ended up just three points behind the New York Rangers in the overall standings.

Do you believe, like Darche does, that Roy is the right man for the job there?

More details to follow.
